Late planting sweet corn

I planted my sweet corn late, mid June. It was about 85 day. I heard you will have more bug problems with planting it late. I havent planted much in the past, So what should I look out for to be ready to takle the bugs. I have sevin liq. and dust on hand.

Here in East Central Indiana there are two potential bug problems that only bother late plantings for the most part.

One is corn rootworm beetles that have newly emerged from the soil in corn fields. If you are near those fields, be on the watch for them as they can decimate the brand new silks in a hurry and the ears can be pitifully unfilled out. Another problem is ear worms that in some years hit late plantings.

Their relatives the cucumber beetle will also get into the silks.

I'm now 3.5 weeks in to my corn. Unfortunately, out of the 16 squares that I planted, only 11 came up. I'm surprised that I ended up with so many empty squares; I planted three seeds per square. I'm concerned that I will have problems with pollination. Is there anything I can do to ensure that the 11 plants are pollinated well and produce full ears? Here's a diagram that shows the layout. too late for me to replant sweet corn that germinated poorly?

You are borderline concerning replanting. Perhaps you could leave some of it and replant the rest. I am planting my last planting tomorrow...number 7 planting. It will make it ok...75 day Ambrosia bi-color. Some years late plantings do well and other years not as well...less vigor and flavor.

Spacing would need to be considerable (about a football field away). However, if the varieties don't tassel at the same time, it won't matter. If they will tassel at the same time (e.g., they're both early, mid-season or late varieties), you can plant two weeks apart so they won't tassel at the same time. Check the "days to harvest" estimate on the seed packages to determine if they will shed pollen around the same time.

How will I know if they are infected with insects?
With beans they eat the leaves. But I dont know much about sweet corn.

If beetles hit your corn silks, they will hit them as soon as the silks emerge....two days later is too late.

You will not know if you have ear worms until you open the ears. Some people put mineral oil on the silks right after pollination.
