apple tree root stock

I was at Lowe's yesterday and asked what type of root stocks their trees are on, and they gave me the name of the nursery they buy from. I called them to ask what root stock they use, and was told that all their apple trees are grafted on domestic seed grown roots.

I have been trying to determine what type will do best in KY before I spend a lot of money.

I did buy a couple of trees to try, so I'll know in a few years if Arkansas Black does ok.

I just never heard of domestic seed grown rootstock being used for grafting before. All the other nurseries sell trees on rootstocks like EMLA-111, Geneva 30, EMLA-106 etc.

The man I spoke to said that theirs is just what grows from apple seeds. No letters or numbers involved, so it seems to me that it is up to the luck of the draw as to what you will end up with.

Lmk what you think.
