Chronic health problems from last year's vegetable garden
Comments (59)Many of our medical people have not yet accepted that exposure to many of the poisons sprayed on land that is "conventionally" farmed can cause chronic health problems even though they recognize they can cause acute health problems. Exposure to more then one could cause a symbiotic relationship that is not healthy. That some people are more susceptible to adverse reactions to these poisons is also a known and if that person is exposed to more than one of these potential allergins can cause even larger problems. Unfortunately the only way to find put if a person is suscetible to any substance is to expose them to that substance. While an allergist can, and will, test someone for these types of allergies it will only be done if there is good reason to suspect there is a need. So alaria121 if you are still able to please update us on what, if anything has been found....See MoreCat with Heart Failure
Comments (2)I've had dogs and cats with cardio disease, some who were born with it and never lived to be a year, others who developed it over time, into old age. Here is my experience with my dog Samantha who had her disease diagnosed at the age of 14. I noticed she was throwing up clear liquid and that she wasn't herself. I brought her to the vet and the xray confirmed she was full of fluid from heart disease. They gave her meds but her prognosis was not good and she only lasted about a month after. One Saturday morning she just couldn't catch her breath. The vet had told me when this happened it meant the meds were no longer going to work and it would be time to relieve her of her suffering. So I immediately scooped her up and rushed her to the vet to say good bye. I had a Buddy also, a 19 year old chih who I rescued after Katrina. His former owner could not keep him after he lost everything and his new landlord would not allow pets. At 19 Buddy was absolutely healthy as could be then after 3 years his old heart started to fail him. I treated him for about 2 months or so and then the day came when the meds were no longer working and I had to also bring him to be put to sleep. I had a cat 3 year old diagnosed with cardio myopathy (?spell) and no threatment would help her and 1 week later I had to put her to sleep. Until you get an accurate diagnosis it's difficult to say how and if he can be treated. Just remain positive until you have reason to be otherwise. The best way to diagnose a heart condition is with an ultra sound. Given your cat's age your vet will have to determine if he's strong enough to be sedated to have the test. The reality is they may be able to prolong his life, but for how long will be anyone's guess. Don't jump to conclusions until you get some definitive answers and cross each bridge as it comes. Try to remain upbeat and cheerful around your Buddy as they can sense what we are feeling and will react to it. In other words don't let him know you are worried or else he will be too. LOL Please keep us posted. God bless....See MoreMy cat's health declining
Comments (14)I am so sorry that your old girl is having such problems. Unfortunately, it does sound like she is very near to the end. Her combination of diagnoses is very difficult, because strategies used to treat one issue can make another issue worse. For instance, the cornerstone of management for kidney disease is keeping the cat well hydrated with fluids. However, supplemental fluids can be very dangerous for a cat in congestive heart failure. Also, the Lasix that is being used to treat the congestive heart failure can also be very hard on the kidneys. So the treatments your cat is receiving have the potential to do both good and harm to your cat's overall condition. When a cat reaches the point where several major body systems are failing, as is the case with your girl, sometimes medicine ends up doing more harm than good. Both anemia and kidney disease can cause a cat to lose her appetite. Anemia may be temporarily treatable, but kidney disease is progressive, as is congestive heart failure. If your girl is only walking a little and sleeping most of the time, the anemia and heart failure have probably weakened her substantially. Not eating is weakening her further. You could try bringing her home and assist feeding her (feeding her by mouth with a needleless syringe or eyedropper), but that wouldn't do anything to cure her underlying illnesses. I am so sorry that you are in this position. I, too, have a cat in the last stage of life who I will need to be helping to pass on very soon. In fact, he's lying on the chair next to me, sleeping peacefully, but losing ground quickly. I, too, dread making that final decision, but I know it is my last responsibility to him. Imminent heartbreak is never an easy thing to accept. Laurie...See MoreIBS or Lymphoma
Comments (6)sduck2, I am very , very sorry to hear what your little one is going through... Getting a finicky cat (and I have a couple of these) to eat is always a real challenge--and I know you'll get MANY suggestions. One thing that seems to work well with one my sick cats (a foster cat I am taking care of at the moment), is to put the food through the blender, with chicken broth (home made). I usually put a couple of varieties (kitten food which she usually just licked before). This reduces it to the consistency of baby food, and I give her a full table spoon every 3-4 hours. I also add some supplements (Anitra vita minerals) She actually licks the plate clean and is eating more now! You may want to replace the chicken broth by some tuna juice, at first, since she seems to go for that. My very best to you both, Anne-Marie...See MoreRelated Professionals
