Pears not waking up?

Hello I have 20 pears and asian pears that I grafted and planted last year back in my orchard All my other l pears, pears that I grafted this year and my rootstock pears are growing just fine and woke up long ago. What could be deal with these trees. I scratched one and it is still green underneath but no are pushing any buds some buds are falling apart. Some of the rootstocks these trees are grafted to are sending out suckers though. Could the scions previous location have anything to do with them waking up? Are they taking longer because they are grafted? The rootsctock is pyrus calleryana. The scions came from trees in oregon and arkansas. We had had 950 chilling hours this year which i think should be more than enough for any pear. Let me know what you think.

Were the trees leafed out last year? The grafts took? I understand the when a pear rootstock is used it needs to be sweated before its put out in the field.

Yes they leafed out last year and the grafts took; but still no growth on the asians as of yet. The buds swelled a long time ago but some are now drying out and falling off.

Unfortunately, I suspect that your suspicions may be correct, that apples may be more adaptable to lower-chill areas than pears are. I'm in Southern California and my Passe Crassane does not appear to be doing so well either. Although it did put out blossoms in late February, it has shown classic signs of inadequate chill, the size of the leaves are very small and the leaf growth has been pretty sparse. (probably only 100-150 chill hours here though) It's particularly interesting because Passe Crassane was supposedly the result of a hybrid between quince and pear (by French nurseryman Louis Boisbunel in 1855), and quince does grow well here. Hats off to you for planting this once iconic, but now apparently obscure variety. Despite being a hard Winter pear, it is said to have the most exquisite flavor of any pear variety, on par with or even exceeding Comice. Unfortunately it is extremely vulnerable to fire blight in other regions of the country, which has probably curtailed its popularity.

HFP! Let them be for awhile. All of my figs died back to the ground. I pulled the mulch away from the trunks this week to find all of them showing growth at root level. My peaches, plums, pears and apples are all green, fruiting and buku growing. I am beginning to understand that figs are a different beast. I pulled figs other years that I thought were dead and probably weren't. I have 6 in the ground and 2 in pots. All are just beginning to show signs of life. It was a tough winter... (I have excuses for everything...)

Looking to get a black front door. The third picture is the before, the stone was veneer and falling off. The paint was peeling. I see it as a blank canvas ready to add layers to bring character. The first 2 pictures are current. We will not be planting anything in the ground in front of garage. Maybe planter boxes? needed a new walk and patio, and we are happy with the front stairs. We know we need more, and are going to work with someone on the landscaping on the right side, but need help with the left side.

I'm in zone 9 also and my pears are just now starting bud break. I bet yours will start soon too.

One of my four asian pears just pushed out some flower buds, other three are still sleeping. I deeply water them once a week now. My two apple trees already have many grape-size apples on them.

Ill bet the unually cold winter sent them into a real dormancy. When this happens the trees may leaf a little later but when they do it will really bust out!

Mac man, it sounds like a rootstock incompatibility there. Often it can take awhile for it to show. I don't know much about callery as a stock but its never used commercially and maybe incompatibility is a reason why it is not used. The fact that the buds started to swell but then dried out means they are not going to make it.

Rootstock incompatiblity Really?? They grew up about 6 ft though. Also Dave wilson uses calleryana http://www.davewilson.com/roots.html with their asian pears. Could it be too much water?? It was very wet where I planted.

Since you said above that the roots are sprouting that means they are alive and the water didn't do them damage. Actually, looking at what you wrote you said only some of them are sending out suckers. The ones not sending out suckers may have drowned.

How much they grew is not going to help a lot with diagnosing rootstock compatibility, it is often delayed and sometimes for a lot more than a year.

I didn't know anyone used callery comercially and that makes me downgrade my suggestion that that is your problem, if you were putting asian scions on those stocks. If you were putting Euro scions on callery, there is still a strong likelihood there is delayed incompatibility going on.
