Apple tree questions

Would this idea work? I just visited the local Big Lot store and they just put out for sale a large assortment of fruit trees. They seem to be all dwarf trees for $13.50 each.

I just cut some scions from a very old tree that we think is a golden delicious apple tree that by the way it looks does not have to much time left to be on this earth. I was going to purchase rootstock and graft those scions to.

If I where to purchase one of those trees the same type (Golden Delicious)at Big Lot and take it home keep it balled up for awhile could I graft a few of those scions I have onto it while it is in that stage of growth? The only reason for me to want to do that is because we are not sure that the apple we are trying to save is a golden delicious

so by grafting a couple of those scions on the newly purchased tree we can hope to have that variety continue on.

Thanks for you time.
