planting bare-root cherries

We bought a couple of bare-root cherry trees (Bing and Rainier) when it looked like our winter weather was ending. Well, the snow stopped but the rains began and the ground is wet and muddy. We've got them sunk sideways in cardboard boxes lined with large trash bags filled with peat moss and newsprint we're keeping moist. How long can we keep them that way? Is there a better way to keep them alive and healthy until we get a few days of sun around here?
