itchy scalp...

Hi,

I recently have discovered little red bumps on my hand that itch insanely! Along with the itchiness, I am starting to have dandruff which has never happened to me before. I have just recently started using the Neutrogena T/GEL dandruff shampoo, but I don't know exactly what it is I am dealing with on my scalp. Does anyone know? And can anyone know of a "recipe" to help my scalp and rid the itchiness?

selsun blue. Get the strong variety, not the normal stuff. There is another product called multi-tar. It is much more powerful but smells really really bad when it gets wet.

It looks like Tints of Nature hair color (home box color) might be a little better chemically than Wella. The same company also has a professional salon version called Organic Colour Systems. Henna can be another option, I think some Hennas use Indigo, so they can make more colors than just reds, like browns, and possibly black. I've read that with some of the more chemical free shampoos, your hair can go through sort of a "detox" phase for a month or less where you can experience greasy hair, dry hair, dandruff, etc. before it gets back to feeling normal. Hard water can also affect the shampoos, but there are things you can add that can be helpful with this. For really chemical free shampoo and other beauty/personal care products you might want to check out Bumble and Bee Organic, Real Purity, or Natural Joy Beauty (sells some of the products from the other two companies along with others). Natural Joy Beauty and Bumble and Bee both sell samples of some of their products. Head and Shoulders ruins your hair. Pantene is not good either. Go to a place where they sell professional products and talk with the owner. There's one type of shampoo that is supposed to be really good, but for the life of me, I can't remember the name LOL Not sure if it's kelp or what. Will have to find out. It's a "natural" product. A bit pricey but well recommended by many professional hairdressers. Re rinsing hair well - that's so true! Do you use a lot of products on your hair (gels, sprays, etc.)? You might need to get a product that removes all of that which you use about once a week.

Asked if there was a topical he could use. Nurse said to try Metrogel; she called in a prescription. (shudder) I'm hoping that's not the full story. I know a lot of nurses try to play doctor but practicing medicine over the phone and prescribing medication on top of it? S/he should be turned in. Red, crusty & weeping. Of course it could be a lot of things or even a combination but the description of Eczema from this site says: "Eczema (from the Greek ekzein "to boil out") and dermatitis generally appear as dry or weeping, intensely itchy skin with raised areas that look like small blisters. In severe cases, atopic dermatitis and eczema symptoms may include crusted-over lesions. Eczema is usually caused by environmental irritants (nickel, detergents, perfumes, hair colorants) or allergies, whereas psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disease with a strong genetic component. Psoriasis (from the Greek psoera "to itch") appears as reddened, rough, raised, and slightly itchy skin covered with silvery, scaly flakes. There is no cure for psoriasis. Common locations are the elbows, hands, feet, and lower back, although some outbreaks include an itchy scalp. Psoriasis can affect the joints and cause arthritis-like symptoms." I imagine he's quite uncomfortable. Hope he gets some relief soon.

When I was in school, I think I shampooed 2 or 3 times a week. I had great hair. When I left home and got into the workforce, I found I needed to shower more often because I was a waitress and smelled like food. With showering more often, came shampooing more often. When I had my 3rd baby and became a stay at home mom, I didn't wash my hair as often. Who has time to shower and shampoo daily? Then back to the workforce I went. I went back to washing daily whether it needed it or not. I've always known it was hard on the hair. My hair did thin quite a bit after the birth of my daughter (baby #3), but it was still very managable. But the older I get the less managable it is. It dries easier, frizzes, is fly-away..... I think dying my hair doesn't help. Harsh chemicals, even though I only colour my hair 2 or 3 times a year. The grey roots get really long before I colour again. Right now, they're probably 1 1/2" long. Because of this thread, I'm trying two things: organic shampoo and conditioner along with the mouse to put less chemicals on my hair. And shampoo less often to get the natural oils to do their job, rather than continue to strip my hair of what mother nature intended for it to have. I may also switch to the organic moisturizers and face cleansers. Back to basics. It can't hurt to try. Can it?

you have an allergy, stop using neutrogena, the hand head connection could be more than incidental, i have a horrible reaction to fructis!! try soapbark and rosemary rinses instead, they are cleansing, astringent and anti inflammatory. nettle and egg cream works well as a non allergic and soothing conditioner.

If ther only thing you have changed recently is to the nutragena shampoo then that is the problem. Lose it! I agree with the poster above.

If ditching the shampoo doesn't help with the itchy scalp, you might go to your dr. I had the same problem & it ended up I have psorriasis on my scalp. Only on my scalp, go figure. I use Head & Shoulders shampoo & my dr gave me a steroid gel for when it flairs up. I am looking for some herbal remedies, though, too, that I could use on my scalp w/o smelling like a pasta dish or affecting my hair health or color.

Check with the doctor first. I was advised all the smelly (chemical-wise) shampoos,tar ointment, etc, when all I needed was a bit of vinegar in the rinse water. Do get your skin looked at first though.
