Butternut Squash Blossoms?

alrightypewriter

So I have a female butternut squash blossom that is going to open soon but no male flowers to pollinate it. I planned to pick it and eat it but I was wondering if you could also eat the unpollinated ovary (little squash) too? Or should I only stick to the flower part?

Also, I have a crookedneck growing next to it so I'm wondering if they can cross pollinate? Is that bad? I don't plan on keeping the seeds to plant next year.
