Millipedes eating squash vine?

I have what I think is millipedes eating the base of squash vines (Sunshine winter squash).

I haven't found anyone else online having this problem- everyone seems to have squash vine borers instead.

In an attempt to see if I had a SVB on the inside, I pulled and dissected the most affected plant.

It wilts during the hottest part of the day when the other plants are OK.

Aside from the 2 millipedes(?) on the outside, I also found 2-3 on the inside of the vine.

It appears that they ate their way in and were making themselves comfortable.

Here's a small section of the stem with one of them still in it.

Is this really a millipede? Also, what can I do to stop them from attacking my squash vines?
