Gloria peach or PF 24 cold hardy or ??

Having a devil of a time trying to figure out which peach to get. Is the Gloria peach really quite disease resistant or not so much? I like the idea of a cold hardy peach like the PF 24 but not sure how it is for diseases. I am running out of space (and time) and really need to limit myself here so cannot get both. I would also entertain input for another variety. The mission here would be something to survive zone 5b, disease resistance, good taste. In that order. Ideas??

Contender and reliance are very cold hardy to your zone and bloom late. You do not have to worry about late frost anymore with this two. And also good disease resitant. Taste good too.

Thanks for the vote. I do have reliance currently and it is going fairly well. Though I have leaf curl I will spray for very very soon. I may look into contender.

JW, I think you have a good dream and like many of us are willing to do extra to get them to produce. The aluminum bubble wrap would help keep the sun from warming one side and causing the dreaded south west injury from the sun. I think white paint would do the same. Wrapping a whole small tree would keep the small tender ends from drying out which is a problem that I have. I do not think it would do much good to alter the lowest temps but as you know sheltered trees of any type do better when out of the cold north wind. That is why some people have advocated shoveling a mound of snow around or even over tender fruit trees. Snow will also insulate the ground and keep the frost from penetrating to any depth. I always found it interesting to dig down through the snow in places of great snowfall like Buffalo and find the ground not frozen at all! Be aware that snow that forms a saucer shape at the bottom of a tree may do great harm in concentrating the sun's heat on the lower trunk area and increasing the likelihood of SW Injury. Again here painting the trunk white may minimize that. If there are other peach trees near you that are surviving then you should have some success. Using these new hardy peach varieties and all the tricks in the book make life interesting out here on the fruit frontiers. More tips are sure to come from this thread as we head into spring.Keep that picture of a peach tree loaded with ripe fruit in your mind. It may not be just a dream.

Fruit- MSU (southwest area of the state) had this posted a week ago: -------------- "Peaches moved through bloom quickly last weekend. Bloom is ending with fruit in the shuck in many orchards. There was a good peach bloom in parts of Berrien County and some growers are blossom thinning where bloom is heavy. Areas where the winter lows did not fall much below -13 degrees Fahrenheit have a good crop, -15 F have a light crop of flowers often in the tops of the trees, and areas where the temperatures fell below -17 F have few if any blooms." ------------------------------------------------------------------------- If she's determined to have peaches, then go for it. They'll work in Wisconsin, but view them as an annual and know that any winter, any one nite and they'll be toast. At least for me in my yard, I'm done with peaches. I've dug out 3 peaches so far this spring and plan on removing the last 2 this fall. My view after this winter is apricots are a touch hardier then sweet cherries (at least Lapins), and maybe a touch less hardy then Japanese plums (at least Satsuma)...but all 3 are very close and all 3 did flower, although super light (Satsuma probably had the most flowers per branch). Lapins sweet cherry opened exactly 4 blooms over the weekend AFTER the tree had leafed out. I'd suggest Tomcot apricot. You could also try a hybrid plum if you want something very hardy, plus they are pretty trees and smell wonderful for about a week every spring. You could also try a Japanese plum or even a sweet cherry, brown rot is a beast around here with our wet/cool springs.

Conan--Here's my experience. Planted a Reliance and Intrepid spring of 06. Had about -15 or so that winter, both trees made it through with no problem. Both bloomed a little, the Intrepid set one fruit. The trees went dormant well and we had a longish fall, no severe drops in temperature. In late January, the temperatures went to -28 for several days. In March when the frost went out, both trees' branches were greenish/red and supple, looking like they had made the winter with no problem. The branches then proceeded to dry up and I thought both trees were dead (We did not have any severe cold come back during the spring, either). Once branch coming out near the base of the Intrepid (above the graft) put out leaves in late April/early May, about right on cue with other fruit trees, then slowly other branches started putting out leaves, starting near the base of the branch and slowly extending outwards. The Reliance showed no sign of life. The Intrepid continued over the summer to put out leaves, eventually extending out about 2/3 to all the way out on the branches, and it put a lot of growth on. In late June, the Reliance put out a bud at the top of the trunk where it broke into branches. This was gradually followed by others, and by end of summer it had quite a few new branches from that spot with 3 feet of growth. Fall 09, the Intrepid's growth had matured and the tree was starting to turn color the 1st of Oct. The Reliance was still very green, and only the lowest parts of the new growth were showing signs of the wood starting to mature. Oct. 2nd it started snowing, which was followed by a week of sub-freezing temperatures, a couple nights got down to 12, and the warm up after that was mid-late November temperatures instead of October ones. The Intrepid finished dropping its leaves after the first hard freeze, the leaves are still hanging on the Reliance now. The Reliance does not look too good to me--the branches aren't greenish-red and supple, more like reddish scarred and sometimes a bit shriveled. The Intrepid shows a mix, from greenish-red and supple branches to some that are just reddish scarred and a bit shriveled looking at the tips. We had a week with -28 in early December, then another brief stint in late January where it was about -22. On the hopeful side, we did not have any warm weather during the winter. We have finally gotten up into the 40's this last week, the first time we've seen that (or really even above freezing) since Thanksgiving. So, if the trees did get to their fullest dormancy, there was no warm weather to reduce it.

I know. Those middle ones are going to need serious pruning! I plan on trying to make them spread east/west and keep them very narrow north/south...but oh well. Live and learn! I have an ok sized yard, but nothing huge, so i really try to keep things tight. The spot they are in get lots of sun all day until about 5 when a big maple starts to throw its shade on them. Whats interesting is how well they grow in this soil i have. When the fruit really starts rolling in i'll be stratifying a lot of seeds and plan on learning the art of grafting so then if i chop a tree, its no loss. I'm ruthless when it comes to plants, if i don't like them or the spot they are in, there gone! My wife didn't like watching me take the chainsaw to a nice Green ash we had in the backyard! She'll like it when its heating us next winter :) Since the picture above i've increased the mulch in every direction. On the other side of the driveway i'm using a row of 3 peaches.

Hi Dan,

I have a PF 24 C peach tree. I planted it in spring 2010. We had a very snowy winter of 2010-11 with about 84" of snow. It survived with no issue. This past summer (its second year), it gave me 5 large, juicy peaches. It tasted sweet and refreshing.

I don't know about disease yet since it's quite young. I've heard that sometimes it takes 4-5 years for some diseases to show up on a peach tree.

I sprayed Kocide 3000 early in the spring of 2011. I did not have any problem during the summer. In late fall, I saw oozing at the base of the tree. It might be borer. I clean the area out as well as I could. I resign myself to the fact that growing peach is not that easy. I want to eat my own peach so I am willing to deal with it (for now). Overall, I like my PF 24 C. I have PF 1 but it's only a year old.

By the way, I thought I was in zone 5 b until someone here posted a new zone map recently. It looks like Central MA is in zone 6 now. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I second the Flamin' Fury PF-24C!

A local commercial orchard located in zone 6A had great success with PF-24-007 (the parent to PF-24C) from Stark Bros on Red Leaf rootstock. This is labeled as Flamin' Fury Jumbo peach on their site.

Also the Grandpas Orchard website has both varieties PF-24C & PF-24-007 available. I have ordered from them in the past with great success.

This year I broke down for the PF-24-007 from Stark Bros. The PF-24-007 currently holds the world record for size but I'm sure a lot of factors are involved.

Thanks. I also may now be in 6, on some maps. But I know for certain I am not part of the zone 6 that is near me. I would like to be a bit cautious.

I hope some one with the Gloria peach can chime in but it sound like if I go with the PF 24 I should be in good shape.

I also saw some ooze coming from my peaches a few years ago when they were younger. I took a piece of weed eater string, poked it all around, dug, scraped, pulled, poked again, etc. Oozing stopped soon after so I must have gotten them all. My cherry tree though.. it didnt make it due to I think borers. grrr.

Your probably not going to go wrong with either one (Gloria or 24c).

Paul Friday is located in a climate very similar to yours so I'd be surprised if you had any special issues with any of his trees. All his peaches have decent resistance to bac. spot and doubt any of them would have the rot problems found in some of the west coast varieties. 24c has been around quite a while and I've not heard any negatives about it.

24-007 is supposed to have a real problem with split pits (which doesn't surprise me).

NJ also puts out some good peaches. I've ordered Gloria for this spring. It probably doesn't have the hardiness of 24c, but it would be rare you'd need that extra hardiness in zone 5b.
