My onions keep falling over!
Comments (10)alys After being alarmed about my onion plant leaves "bending" and growing all catty-wumpused, my mind was finally set to rest. This year's my first growing them, too. I think that when they're ready for harvest, they'll ALL turn yellow-brown and fall over. They won't be that green if untidy-looking mass of mostly upright leaves anymore. I have a couple of small ones doing this now, so I'll uproot and dry those now. Given their DTM, mine should be ready sometime in June unless they bolt before then. I can already see some of the onions above the soil, half-buried, and am pleased with their size, though I'm not counting on giants!...See Morewhen onions get little turbans on the end of the stalks
Comments (8)Your onion sets are producing 3-6 different stalks? If they were separate stalks or shoots that would be a bad sign as they end up splitting into many small bulbs. I don't think I've ever seen an onion split into more than 2 shoots/bulbs though. Maybe this is just 3-6 leaves all coming from one spot at the base of the onion plant. That would be normal and good. Fertilize and water thoroughly now, while the plants are small. Feeding them later when you can see that the forming bulbs are going to be smaller than you hoped is too late. The amount of growth that happens while they are young will determine the bulb size later. The bulbs do form near/on the surface. I'm not sure about your climate but I'll go on a limb and guess you will notice a big increase in size around mid-summer. after the bulbs stop swelling a lot cut slowly back on water and let the bulb tops begin to dry out. Eventually the tops will die and the bulbs will "cure" and be ready for eating/storage. We grow Walla Walla sweets here in the Pacific NW. If Texas Sweet is similar (although it *obviously* can't be as good) it may not be a storage onion. In that case eat em up within two months or so. Send me some if you need help in that ;-)...See MoreOnions not falling over, but shriveling up
Comments (4)If you feel the neck 2 inches above the bulb, at the place where the onions should be falling over, you will notice a thin spot if the onions are ready to go down. I think when moist weather prevails a lot of times they don't fall without help....See MoreOnion seedlings falling over... Normal?
