For years I grew lettuce all summer for customers, though I don't eat lettuce salads once all the summer veggies start coming in. The Batavia lettuces and others (Italienisher, Sierra, etc.) that catalogs note are heat resistant are good choices. Also, harvesting as cut and come again rather than heads seems to help. The real trick is getting seed to germinate. I used to set up shade using an old, light colored bed sheet draped on the south side of metal hoops ( I grew in blocks, not rows)but open some on the north side. I kept the ground moist and the shade cloth wet. And I didn't expect them to last real long so I sowed repeatedly.

Worked for me in temps in low 90s.

Nevada holds in the garden for a very long time without bolting. The heads just get bigger and bigger. I can't remember having one bolt. Also, I like the eating quality of Nevada.

I'm trying Jericho for the first time this year, I've read good things about it.

Jericho has always disappointed me. I'd really like to find a better heat-resistant romaine.

Nevada, otoh, is everything it's claimed to be and more. Absolutely my favorite lettuce.

Has anyone tried Sunset? It claims to be so bolt-proof the growers have trouble producing seed.

I've got spinach, romaine, and bibb lettuce in the shade that I seeded in place in March. Threw the packages away so I don't know their names but they all said heat resistant on the label. Since mid-April it's been at least 90 and often 100 degrees. I'm still harvesting leaves several times a week.

Shade & enough water seem to be the key. If you pick lettuce and it's kind of limp, just put it in water in the frige and it will get more crisp.

Update: Did another harvest of Nevada and Summertime, still standing very well despite a very warm opening of July. I may actually run out of lettuce before it bolts, at this rate. Wishing I'd left at least one of the better-headed Summertime plants out to see how big it would actually get.

I saw that Gurney's is claiming Ithaca will mature in 65 days, which I don't really believe. I wonder if anyone has grown this one together with Summertime. The main problem with iceberg types is the time til harvest.

I did start a small amount of Sunset, to see if it could be grown in July.

About a week ago I went to Longwood Gardens and they had a Romaine lettuce called 'Red Rosie.' It looked like it was thriving even though the temps were around 90 when I was there. It looked so good in the heat that I took a photo of it so that I could remember to locate seeds.

However, I am unable to find a seed source for this particular variety.

Has anyone tried this lettuce an, if so, how did it hold up?

I grow Little Gem romaine.Mid-size heads.Solid centers with lots of leaves to eat.I started them inside in April and just pulled the last 4 heads.None went to seed.

I usually grow Little Gem and Tom Thumb in the fall, because they grow a head quickly.

Not surprised they'd work out for spring.

Is it the right time to start some seeds for fall Lettuce in my zone?

ricdeloft--still too early to start fall lettuce. Here in zone 6 I sow fall lettuce in late August. Once again, the trick is to keep the soil moist and cool.

I just planted out some Ben Shemen transplants from seed I purchased from Bountiful Gardens, I'll let you know how it turns out

I've planted a little and will soon plant more. I've got the seeds, and if it fails, I'll pull it out and plant again later.

If you don't try it, you won't know.
