Please help identify my persimmon and pomegranate problems

The pictures were taken from last late summer. The leaves on both trees have similar problems. They curled up and deformed. The growth of the trees seemed to be stunted somewhat. I have had this problem two years in a row. Can someone please help identify what the problem is? Thanks a lot!

Have you put any herbicide near these trees? Perhaps a weed&feed on the lawn? That would be my first guess.

Yes, I usually use Scotts weed and feed lawn fertilizer in mid April. The leave problem started to show up in June or July and they stayed on the leaves until winter. By the way, the problem seems to affect the leaves on the current year's growth only.

If it isn't mushy I wouldn't worry about it by the looks of things the stalk is just starting to harden and turn woody.. same as a young tree would as it gets older. The top of the cactus is a compleatly different cactus to the base that it is on ... if you are worried about the life of the yellow part of the cactus remove it and graft it to a desert cactus instead. It will help it live longer and gives it much better living conditions. The green part of your cactus is a compleatly different cactus all together and is actually a tropical cactus with different watering needs. It's like attaching a cat to a dog and feeding it fish food... neither will survive long unless you seperate them and give them the individual care that they need. both parts look compleatly healthy so I wouldn't panic, the stem is just coming into adulthood :)

There is a common term "squirrely" and a few years ago I learned where it comes from. This spring also. I have a large Grecian urn as a feature in my new garden under a Black Walnut tree. I watched a squirrely squirrel jump from the urn to my Krossa Regal and back over and over again until my hosta was flattened. It was enjoying itself until I unleashed my German Shorthaired Pointer on it. They love bombing my things with walnuts, but I have never seen them eat a hosta. What they do is when they smell recently disturbed dirt they dig looking for burried nuts so they might uproot newly planted hostas. I wonder if some pressed garlic will discourage this? Les

I don't know either...I'm not familiar with plants of the Pacific Northwest. But if your puppy is exhibiting any unusual symptoms, you may want to bring her to the vet to be examined, just in case... I agree with FataMorgana that you may want to try GardenWeb's "Name That Plant" forum (see link at the bottom os this post) and see if someone there can help identify the plant. A photo would definitely help. Here's a link for GardenWeb's Northwestern Gardening Forum...maybe someone on that forum may know what the plant is. NORTHWESTERN GARDENING FORUM: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/nwest/ You can also try bringing or e-mailing a photo of the plant to your local Cooperative Extension if you are still concerned. They may be able to help identify it. Try "googling" the name of your county plus the words "Cooperative Extension" to find yours. Sometimes state park employees or people who work at nature preserves can be helpful in identifying plants if there is a state park or nature preserve near you. You can also try contacting your local chapter of the Washington State Native Plant Society and see if they can help you identify the plant. WASHINGTON NATIVE PLANT SOCIETY: http://www.wnps.org/ There is also always a chance it is a non-native plant that has escaped from someone's garden, perhaps by birds or mammals distributing the seeds inside the pods/fruits via their droppings. My first thought is to agree with Fruitnut. Looks like herbicide damage from a phenoxy herbicide--2,4-D, MCP, and Dicamba are probably the most commonly used and one of these is probably in weed and feed. These herbicides can release vapors which will affect the foliage on sensitive plants even if you didn't contact them directly, and quite often light damage will show up in new growth while existing growth at the time of application will show little sign of damage.

Glyphosate can also result in mis-shapen growth and chlorosis on new growth after minor exposure.

When applying herbicides to your lawn, do it when there is a very light breeze(not wind) that is expected to continue until the herbicide has been neutralized or washed into the ground for breakdown by the soil. If it is dead calm, vapors or mist can form and stay in your yard. A light breeze will dilute this with fresh air so it is non damaging. Some trees are just extremely sensitive to these herbicides and need to be given a wide berth when applying and don't leave the empty application equipment near the tree, either--for sensitive trees, if you can smell it, so can the tree.

Some of these herbicides can hurt the trees by acting thru the roots. I nearly killed some grapes once by applying 2,4-D too close to the vines in late winter before there was any foliage.

It probably won't kill your trees but if possible at least apply none near them.

Hey Scott,
Not to pile on here but they are right. Weed and feed will do this every time. Especially in the wicked drought were in right now. At least we got a little rain last night-this am. Skip the weed and feed and your trees will be ok.

Thanks for all your valuable advice. I have decided to skip the synthetic lawn fertilizer all together. I started a compost pile last fall and I am going to use compost instead :)
