digital defeat- back to a 35 mm-advise on which one..

I tried and failed.

Spent probably 5 hours with a manual, the camera, my computer, or tech support and just couldn't make a go of it. The pics will not go onto my mac. even tho they are supposed to be compatible. Without that perk- what's the point? I can't say the pic quality of the fuji 4.1mp A345 is better than my recently broken basic 35mm. I would say it's pokey to take the shot- before the subject has moved or the wind has blown the flower into a blur.

Looking for advise on a very affordable point and shoot 35mm. Most of my pics are garden pics, kids, horses, santa....

I have to get one before an event this weekend.

One site had olympus stylus zoom and olympus stylus epic with a 4/5 star rating.

Any thoughts?

I'm not into all that manual setting stuff- I've even been to a photography class. It's just not me but... I do want a most excellent pic. Maybe I'll reconsider the digital when we've upgraded teh computer next year.

in the meantime what do you suggest for the $150 or less budget?

Try my Minolta Zoom 160C and you won't give it up ever!

Karen, I tried a Fuji when my diggie camera broke down. But I'm not sure I'd recommend it--I'll have to review the pix I printed from it.

Here are the dates I have for the gaillardia seeds that I planted: Gaillardia 'Tokajer' WS on 1/16, germinated 3/3/09 Gaillardia 'Burgundy' WS on 1/16, germinated 3/14/09 Gaillardia 'Goblin' WS on 3/7/09, germinated 3/19/09 The germination percentage isn't great, probably around 50%, but more may germinate once the temps warm up consistently. What I love about all of my Gaillardia plants, and I already have about a dozen, is that they are blooming machines, but mine don't usually bloom until the second year. Oh, and I've found if I move them in the fall, they don't come back, but if I move the plants in the spring, it just sets them back a few weeks on the bloom time. In zones 6 and 7, I would think they would be up by the end of April, unless the containers are in a shady location. Bonnie

I think I finally found a winner. I am going to be posting shots from the other cameras too. The Nikon coolpix S8200 does great zoom shots and can get good closeups of flowers and that wasn't even on the macro setting. I posted some pictures here. Great detail on the sweet alyssum and that was a zoom taken from a standing position. The gazebo close up one was taken from the deck at the top of the property. The gazebo is almost at the bottom. You can see the difference between using the zoom and taking it wide open. Also see the property denuded of trees. DH has been cutting down all the Monterey Cypress but that is another story. Hi ... using my wife's call sign. I am in the process of digitizing my slides and will eventually digitize a boat load of my father-in-law's (60+ years worth). I did some research and found that, as mentioned, scanners will do the job, but they're very slow. So, if you're digitizing a few rolls of slides, they'll work fine. But, it's probably takes too much time if we're talking about hundreds or thousands of slides. I have a DSLR, a Nikon D80, and some old slide copying equipment ... a Nikon PB-5 bellows and a Nikon PS-5 slide copier. I attached to this set up a Nikon 28-85mm zoom lens, set at 85mm. With this set up, I can take a digital image of a 35mm slide without cropping (see the picture in the link). You need to use a lens longer than 50mm to avoid the APS-C sensor cropping. My 85mm may not be ideal (a Nikon 105mm Micro/Macro is probably better), but it's what I have available. So, how's this work? Images are OK, not as sharp as the original slide but acceptable. Speed is outstanding. If you don't need to alter the exposure, it's a matter of popping in one slide, hit the trigger, pop in the next. I can digitize a 36-exposure roll in about 15 minutes. I also understand you can use a macro lens (attached directly to the camera body ... no bellows) along with a extension rings in front of the lens, attached to a slide copy holder. Clam Digger, OK, this one isn't cropped (from a P&S Sony with an amazing flare resistant lens). The point of the cropped photos was to show the level of quality available from a viewfinder camera. Sorry about the dig with the pelican photo but you asked for it when you patronized my cat. I understand that you have a long lens on an SLR and that's a capability that few viewfinder cameras possess. And if you want to shoot wildlife then an SLR is the way to go. Long lenses is the biggest reason for an SLR. People are different. The most important lens for me on a 35mm camera is a 28mm and I must have a 24mm as well. Using a lens longer than an 80mm is an occasional experience for me and I could do without it. Different cameras for different people. As for stubborn denial, I prefer to think of it as stubborn assertion. I assert this and I'm right about it: It is fair to say that the much more expensive DSLRs as a group are more capable cameras than the cheaper consumer oriented viewfinder cameras. But there are enough exceptions in both groups that the groups overlap at the edges. A novice like Jean may be very happy with a camera like Susan's 5 megapixel Lumix... And when did someone say something bad about Tokina? I said digital sensors and film have different requirements and lenses designed specifically for digital maximize the performance of the digital sensor. Tokina knows that, that's why they're making a series of lenses for DLSRs. That doesn't mean older lenses are useless, it's not a B&W world. Back to the original point of this post. Jean is shopping for a camera and buying a DSLR isn't the only or necessarily best option for her. Joe, you're a nice guy trying hard to keep the peace. Sorry that the digital isn't working out for you, Karen. It looks like you got yourself a camera with fairly so-so image quality anyway, there are certainly better point-and-shoot digitals in that price range. I'd suggest looking at a Canon Powershot, which has good image quality in auto mode and a good macro for flowers. Or possible a Sony Cybershot which has a good lens, although they seem a bit pricy to me.

I can't really help with the Mac, but I'm surprised it doesn't just plug in the back and go. Possibly it is quite an old one and doesn't have the latest drivers.

Try dpreview.com. It's a pretty good website for viewing comments/reviews on various digital cameras. You can pull up reviews by brand & model, even older ones. If you're looking for 35-mm point and shoot, the Olympus suggested above is good (I still have my old one), and Nikon is also a good choice.

Aside from the drunkan sailer song . . . I would recommend Canon's Rebel G. I used to have one until my hubby upgraded me to the digital version. I'm still figuring out the digital, but LOVED the 35 mm.

I wanted to thank you all for your suggestions.
Since I needed the camera for the weekend I had to limit myself to small town availability.
They had ONLY 4 35 mm choices at walmart and none at all at Staples. I chose a cannon.

I'm wondering if the problem could be with your computer. I've no experience with MAC. With my PC, all I do is plug in and download. Three different cameras and no problem what-so-ever. Canon, Sony, Nikon. And I am sooooo far from being computer savvy.
