Was the fruit you refer to very sweet, smaller than normal, and highly flavored? I've been told that the best fruit in CA is grown dryland in areas with winter rainfall, deep soil, and old drought tolerant trees. That says the exact same thing to me that you stated above. @Fruitnut, Yup, exactly, especially with the sultana style grapes. Although with some fruit it's more to it than just small and sweet like with the grapes, for example pomegranates can get pretty complex flavors on the spectrum of sweet to tart when they're in the middle there of both and when the pits in the seeds become negligible instead of hard as wood chips- or when a nigra mulberry is just huge and so juicy but still extremely flavorful or maybe you've seen here but I haven't when a fig is so ripe the red pink nectar is oozing out from the bottom hole or when a pomegranate bursts open on the tree from the sun fully ripening it not bursting open from a disease or because of excess rainfall. But yeah, definitely a trend of smaller and sweeter exists I'd say- another common example of that would be the strawberries- they're tiny/mushy not aesthetically pleasing at all compared to grocery store strawberries here looking epic and beautiful... but the taste is something else with the small ones. This phenomenon of not watering the wild fruit (which are usually in not so easy places to go pick the fruit) has a name for it in Iran- "bash" lots of different fruit can be "bash" meaning grown wild in drought like conditions. I suspect the trees are pretty old too. I think pomegranate exists like this too- I've had fig and grapes bash before. All that being said, I've had some of my best fruit experiences here too. I was actually born in Virginia am pretty proud of our watermelon and peaches here :). The mid-Atlantic and South can grow very delicious fruit- I've always been impressed with how good fruit can taste in the U.S. once it's actually grown right instead of bought from a typical grocery store. BTW lots of fruit is now being imported to Iran along the same lines of typical grocery store fruit here and it's messing up the market for good tasting local fruit. I'm afraid in very short time if not already typical Iranian fruit markets will be worse than grocery store fruit here... before they all see the light again and start going old school/eco-friendly/green/homegrown/local/organic what have you like what's happening here.

I failed to answer a couple of the questions posted here, and will do so nowÂ PM, that is Anthriscus ÂRavenswingÂ, one sees very little Cimicifuga here Âtoo dry in the summer I think. There was no wind during my weekend , this is why fall is a great time to travel to the coast, less fog, no wind. I would live there in a heartbeat. But y'all already knew that ; ). It's much more appealing to me than the FLW student's home, which seemed a bit builder's-shed-meets-hollywood-regency. There was mention upthread about it not feeling cozy enough, and the glass being too much in dreary weather. These are common criticisms whenever there is a modern house discussed. But I think much of that comes from a simple unfamiliarity with how this type of house lives. The outdoors is meant to be a part of the living experience. Sunny, leafy, rainy, bare, chilly -- it's all a part of it. And when sited on 18 acres like the house in the OP (or on three acres, like mine), there really isn't a privacy issue. I always feel cozy curled up on my sofa in front of the fireplace, but I can also look around (and up through the skylight) to watch the beautiful trees any time I like. It's special to be able to stand in your stocking feet, drinking a cup of tea, watching the snow fall just on the other side of a glass wall. I've lived in a (much) more modest MCM home for almost six years. Lots of floor-to-ceiling glass, with the only window coverings being sheers in the bedrooms.

No. It takes the open airiness of the great major design feature cantilever and turns it into the glass vestibule of a grocery store. It ruins the design of the home entirely. The cantilever is the whole point of the front elevation. Neutralizing that weakens and commonizes the home. You might as well be adding one of the pringles towers that dominate current bad NeoEcclectic “design”. Would Falling Water be more functional with the cantilevered patios enclosed? Sure. But that isn’t the point of the design. The point is the building block balance of the cantilever. Hire a good architect with an affinity for MCM.

Love the New Guineas. I have one with the same leaf and an intense red flower. Are they perennial outdoors for you?

And is that Lavender? I never thought of Lavender growing there but I guess it is perfectly suited.

Alex, Most of these beauties were purchased from our local Home Depot (big box store). Some come from nurseries, gifts from family or friends and trades as well.

Ha ha, PV, come on down (or over)!! :) That variegated Hibiscus 'Cooperi' has been stingy...that's the 1st bloom this year.

I've been trying to determine that fact, Shrubs n bulbs...whether or not the NG Impatiens are perennial for us. I've have them before & couldn't keep them alive. I don't really have shady areas & I've not been known to keep up on regular watering ~so it had been sink or swim for these guys in the past. They're currently under a deciduous tree, but I'm hoping the cooler temps when the tree loses its leaves will help keep them alive. I also have one with an intense red. They are some of my favorite foliage plants!

Yes, that is Lavandula 'Goodwin Creek' with the Hibiscus. I have several other Lavenders. We have a Mediterranean type climate here & they do well if I remember NOT to fertilize them. :)

I killed my 1st Tibouchina, Tina...so I'm happy this one is doing better.

If you don't mind me asking, what are #5 and 6? How is your Gardenia still blooming? Mine quit 8 weeks ago. Lovely plants, by the way!

Don't mind at all, Cheryl...5th one is Clerodendrum ugandense (Blue Butterflies) & 6th one is Justicia carnea.

I don't know the secret of the Gardenia (gift from my dentist!). I planted it out in May, I think, after having it as a houseplant (where it was none too happy ~it dropped many buds & only had 2 blooms). I think it likes being outdoors!

Such a variety of pretty things! I want to get a Blue Butterflies next year. This year, when I saw them, I already had so many things to plant and knew I needed to get it all in before buying more. Next year I will fill in the empty spots! A garden is never complete, right?!

Yes, I love variety, Sher! When we installed our pool, I put in new garden beds around. I put in 200+ plants in one day! Never again! Whew! You're right...it's a work in progress...never finished! Now, I have to work at whacking back our jungle!

Beautiful! Just beautiful!! I love seeing pictures of your plants. They inspire me. I especially liked the Crassula "Baby Necklace." Haven't seen any of that here. Must find some. Keep posting those pictures.
