do any big chain stores sell organic pesticides?

i have been to homedepot and walmart, i don't think that they sell those products to kill pill bugs.

should i go to local nurseries? i don't want to order online, they probably cost more with the shipping fee. i certainly don't want to order several pounds, because the particular area is not very big.

pill bugs are pests. yes, they eat decay organic things, but they also eat live plants. snails probably eat decay organic things, too. it is a myth to say that pill bugs are good because their poops are good. after all, how much do they have to eat in order to keep growing and reproducing.

dude. you don't need to kill pill bugs. spread some grass clippings over your crazy high-wood-content mulch and your plants will be fine.

something is wrong with your garden, pesticides for these bugs is just a bandaid solution.

go to the source. cover up your wood mulch and 'separate' it from your plants by putting a layer of grass clippings over it all. i bet that would fix it.

The primary appeal of the big box retailer, for me, is that I can buy things there at 7am, 9pm, on Saturday evening, or on Sunday. Otherwise I'd prefer to have nothing to do with them unless I have to. There are times when, whether for reasons of necessity or impulse, that I want to buy *something* now. Home Depot has gotten some business from me for that reason. However, I prefer dealing with the local shop that knows what it is doing. I spend thousands per year at my saw shop, and a fair bit at the lawnmower/snowblower/generator shop, too. It took a number of years to find shops I was comfortable dealing with, though. Reasons follow: 1. I want a shop to actually have stuff in stock when I show up to buy. New units, parts, etc., should be ready to go. 1a. If you have to order something, let me place my "order" over the phone. I will NOT drive to you to tell you to order something that I have to drive back to pick up later, because that adds no value for me. It is, instead, a waste of my time. 2. Have hours beyond 5pm. Even 5:30 can help, but a night or two per week of 7pm would be appreciated. 3. Make sure your sales staff really knows their stuff and recognizes that some customers actually know more than they do. Quoting brochures is useless, and if you've never put any time in on the machines you're selling, well, maybe you should. 4. Service machines brought to you promptly. Nothing should sit in the shop for more than a week. My saw shop in particular is good about getting stuff back up and running within a day or two, since their commercial clients require it. 5. Stay abreast of what "enthusiasts" are doing with the equipment you are selling. I once purchased a lawnmower from a shop that also sells Stihl. The owner was nice enough to bring the mower out to my car, and he started checking out my Stihl 066 and turned critical as he launched into a critique of my improper chain filing technique, carrying on about how nobody knows how to sharpen chain anymore, how my cutters were all beat up, etc. In point of fact the chain was square-filed race chain with the back of the cutter removed, the top of the tie straps relieved for chip flow, etc. His ignorance was excusable, but his attitude was not. I don't shop there anymore.

Quebec's ban on pesticides and herbicides which was put fully in effect in 2006, is one of the toughest in North America. The only ones exempt are golf clubs. Even municipalities have to abide. I'm not sure about rotenone or pyrethrin, but if you have a brand name, I might be able to tell you if it's still legal. Here are some of the very few products still available for purchase: Raid and similar bug sprays, insecticidal soaps, non-selective weed killers such as Round-up and Wipe-Out, Scott's Weed-B-Gone (with ferrous sulphate) and Sephora. Some stores such as Canadian Tire, Rona, etal, keep these products under lock and key. I had a heck of a time trying to buy some rat bait at Canadian Tire. I asked a clerk for some advice and he refused to sell me any. Luckily, I notice some packages high up on a shelf which weren't under lock and key, so I returned the next day, got a little Rubbermaid stepping stool and helped myself. Why do the big chain stores throw away plants?

I had been purchasing the "not so great" plants at a discounted price for several weeks and the cashier would list the item on the receipt as damaged - as is. Therefore, no warranty would apply. Then yesterday they were throwing away plants that were in better condition than the ones I had bought. Anyway, I was just surprised. This Lowe's store just doesn't care about their plants. I can tell you that the one in Alpharetta (Windward Parkway) is awesome. They REALLY care about what they do and are very helpful. There is someone always in the garden center willing to help you. I appreciate everyone's stories...it helps me to understand there are some that are compassionate about what they do and are willing to make a decision in the best interest of the plants and then there are some that can't.

That $5000 is GROSS sales, not net sales so any farmer trying to do this as more than a hobby (i.e make actual profit) will not qualitfy. i agree with toughboy that USDA organics is now in the hands of the big boys. if you are going to wholesale your produce or sell in a way that is not direct to the customer than you may need third party certification. But if you are selling direct to your customers you do need that third party cert because you can tell your own story. I was certified organic for 8 years through OEFFA and when the USDA took over I dropped my certification like a hot potato and have never looked back. Now I market using the local foods/locavore angle and my sales are increasing better than when I was certified organic. Even though I have not been certified organic since 2002 and made a huge effort to remove the term organic pertaining to the marketing of my produce and poultry on all label, brochures and websites the USDA sent me a threatening certified mail letter back in January telling me to cease and desist on using the term organic. They based this threat on 5 year old information (mainly a photo taken in 1999 of me and my husband at market with a sign saying Boulder Belt Organics which is our old farm name that is floating around the web. oh the anti USDA organic diatribe on my website that they did not seem to be amused about.) I have written them back and it seems things are okay with the USDA/NOP and Boulder Belt Eco-Farm. I tell folks who ask if we farm organically that we do not legally and we are far above the weak USDA standards. And if they do not believe me they can come out to the farm and do their own inspection

Home Depot and Walmart and Lowes all offer organic products. At least they do here.

But as has been mentioned in several other of your posts, there are far more serious problems with your approach to gardening and your lack of basic gardening knowledge. Killing the pill bugs won't solve those problems.

You could begin by finding out what gardening zone you are in and what the proper planting times for that zone are.

Pillbugs are laughed off by many gardeners who believe the reference books that say they only feed on decaying vegetable matter, but they can be a dangerous pest. Two years ago they wiped out all my melon seedlings, destroyed many of my summer squash seedlings, and maimed a few mature plants by sawing into their stems and climbing up to saw off leaves, which would fall to the ground and be devoured by hundreds of their brethren. I didn't assume this, I caught them in flagrante delicto.

Since then, I haven't had a problem, but when I was in the midst of pillbug warfare I found that Sluggo Plus, applied regularly, did a fair job (don't know about chemicals, I don't use them). Also, growing seedlings in flats or packs and waiting to transplant until they are quite sturdy will help to reduce pillbug damage.

Did you give grass clippings a try?

Another organic method is putting down used coffee grounds around your plants, free for the asking at many Starbucks and other coffee places. Caffeine is effective against many insects. Give it a try.

The coffee grounds will feed your plants a little nitrogen while giving them relief from the bugs.

I'm sorry, I wasn't laughing at pill bugs being a problem, any pest in a garden is not a laughing matter. I just had an image in my head of a skull & crossbone face and little pill bugs running and screaming "run way". Sometimes a little humor can make a bad situation a little better. I agree with the others, there are several good organic methods that should take care of your problem. Good Luck.
