Anyone identify this foxglove?

I have forgotten the name of this one. I got the seed from a stall of the Hardy Plant Society. I know it is supposed to be perennial. The leaves are quite narrow for a foxglove and the individual flowers quite small - it gives a very tall and slender spike.

I was just reading High Country Gardens' catalog and saw one called Digitalis obscura, Narrow-leaf Foxglove. Described as: 18" x 12" wide, ( seed propagated). 2004 Plant Select winner. A rugged perennial species from the mountains of Spain. Digitalis obscura is very different from the woodland Foxgloves commonly offered. The brown and yellow bell-like flowers are extrememly attractive; the upright woody stems and evergreen lily-like leaves are also very ornamental.

This might be what you have. What do you think?

I think you might be right. I do remember buying seed of that name now you mention it.

Anyone Grow Foxgloves?

Thank you Ginny! That hosta is Regal Splendor, by the way, with a Krossa Regal next to it, off to the right. I was just out in a garden on the side of my house that is pretty much completely neglected, lol. I happened to catch a glimpse out the window of my dwarf azaleas in bloom, as well as my Trier rose. So I decided to go out there and take a look in person. (think it's the first time I've been in that garden all spring, lol!) To my surprise, I found two good-sized clumps of d. grandiflora! The clumps are almost as big as the one in my photo above. I do love the way this foxglove spreads. Not agressively, but enough to really enjoy it. Speaking of spreading, last year - well, two years ago - I wintersowed some biennial d. Alba. I think I had about 6 of them. This year they have practically taken over a bed! But I'm loving it! I pull in my driveway and there are about 24 tall white spires at the end of it. Actually, there are dozens more plants - I wonder if they will bloom this year? I would think they should... Terrene, lucky you with the mertonensis! I think these are quite lovely, but I tried several times and they just would not return for me. I'm off to google Spice Island... or is it Island Spice...? :) Dee

Anyone tried Foxglove from Bluestone?

I've ordered literally hundreds of plants from Bluestone. Yes, they do arrive small, but they're so well grown that not only do they often develop into larger and healthier plants by the end of the season than those bought full size at the nursery, but they often bloom the first season as well. However, they sometimes bloom later in the season than they normally would. With that said, I've found that some of the Bluestone digitalis does not bloom the first year, especially those that are not of the perennial kind. Bluestone has quite a variety of perennial foxglove, but the nature of the more common biennial foxglove is that they spend the first year growing and building their strength to produce beautiful flowers the next year. They'll then drop seed to start new plants the same season which will grow and build their strenth to produce beautiful flowers the next year, and so on. Either way, if you have the perennial type of foxglove or the biennial type, you'll have beautiful flowes next year. I bought three different types of foxglove from Bluestone this year and I'm looking forward to their blooms next year, too. Best of luck! Steve

Foxgloves - Small holes in leaves....

Carrie and Duane, Cutworms actually have to surround the stem, they cut the plant off at the stem, not create holes. In order to avoid cutworms one can plant a twig right up against the stem when planting the plant or some others wrap a piece of aluminum foil around the stem before planting. I love that plant! I may try to find seeds. The catalog I saw it in only had plants. They also recommended full or partial sun in lean to average garden soil (not too much compost) and water deeply but not too frequently. Z5-9.

Is this what the leaf of ferruginea looks like? Cause if it is you guys have solved the problem of what foxgloves I have.
