Grdn bed re-do new! *Many pix

If I wait to become a good editor of my 100s of pix, this would never get posted! :D So.o.o.o...

Just a bit of the "before" & some of the "after" of one of my front garden beds. Part near the street was already there & it's a section between our driveway and the neighbor's.

First, I should explain that this area has been flooded a few times...usually only once or twice a year. I finally decided to pull out the grass & plant another garden!

How Often do you Re-Mulch? How Many Yards? Bagged or Loose?

i have large areas of my yard mulched. you have a lot of questions, i'll throw out a couple of answers/observations and let others take on the rest: - you can significantly decrease the amt of mulch/frequency of refreshing by using black or brown landscaping fabric. i recommend it VERY HIGHLY. you can also use newspaper and (for areas with no plantings) glossy catalogues and magazines. (this winter i used all the christmas cataloges i was sent unbidden to block the weeds in a large area -- worked like a charm, and one less thing that needs to be trucked to the dump). i have a bed in full sun with landscaping fabric that i mulched lightly three years ago -- it still looks great. whatever you do -- overlap A LOT. at least 6 inches. - i recommend mulching incrementally rather than all at once. spreading mulch is by far my least favorite gardening task -- it is HARD WORK. better to buy a couple of bags a month and spread it where it needs to go. - the longer you have mulch, the less often you need to replenish. eventually you get rid of weed seeds in the given area. i have a couple of beds that i have had mulched for five years -- they hardly EVER need replenishing. - consider layering an inch or two of leaves and yard waste under your mulch. less mulch you have to use, and it enriches the soil. - consider using pine bark mulch. it's the least ecologically-harmful mulch out there (aside from free mulch from the dump) - check for free trash tree and line-clearing mulch from the dump. i mulched a couple of areas with it last year. breaks down quickly, but, hey, it's free. - i am slowly transitioning away from wood mulch to pine straw. it is SO MUCH cheaper and easier to spread. you have to block the weeds with newspaper. -bagged mulch is (strangely enough) about the same price as mulch from the local landscaping company. it's also easier to handle. however, it's much easier to get a big load of mulch delivered and dumped near your site. it just depends on how much area you need to mulch.

Here is a picture of one of them for context: 1887 window. Actually this is the one an intruder came through a couple of years ago. They grabbed an ipod and left in disgust. Hopefully they put the word out that we have lame possessions (bwahaha, they didn't know the value of our legos and extensive unit block collection!) The muntins are 13/16" wide. Looking carefully at where the glass meets the wood on the interior side, at first I thought they were not bedded: but in this picture, also taken from the interior, you can see a thin layer of something between the wood and the glass, kind of gunky chunky and sticking out in one place where I'm pointing with the deadly lego: so I guess they were originally bedded. I don't know if 13/16" would be considered thin for muntins, but I do want to regard a future restorer. So I guess I'm back to putty. I'd consider 100% silicone; the obstinate child in me wants to believe it could be scraped away from the muntin in 50 years without damage, but if any got out of where I wanted it to be, the non-paintable aspect of it would be an ugly bummer. Is there any chance, based on photos/vintage of the windows, that I could skip the points/glass/old bedding removal step, and just leave the glass in place and reglaze? I'm a perfectionist, but as I'm getting older, I'm becoming more of a pragmatist. I wish gardenweb had a survey feature. It would be fun to see what percentage of window restorers went all the way down to the muntins and rails, and what percentage scraped out the glazing, put in new, and went and had a beer on the porch.

Thanks. We'll leave the listing as-is, then. One less thing to do. The realtor said my pictures were excellent, and this property isn't priced to merit a professional real estate photographer, they're expensive around here. My "fancy flyer" has all the pictures from the listing and a stack is kept at the house, and I'll blow up a nice picture of what the house looked like in early August with everything blooming its little heart out. There will be no more work done on the house except for a major scrubbing and a very little bit of landscaping once the annuals die back next month - we blew our budget to smithereens bringing the house "up to snuff" before we put it on the market. We just can't spend any more on it even though there are things that could be done, unless someone finds a money tree. The idea of only having TP in one bathroom so they won't use the other ones is a pretty good one, I think, since I'm going to be the one driving 45 minutes each way every week to clean the place (a housecleaner being $60 a pop!) and satisfy the insurance company. I'll get some paper towels, too - I put the proverbial "fluffy white towels" in the bathrooms and really don't want to deal with having to launder them! We had 3 (!!!) failed offers with one realtor in the 100ish days he had the listing (very long story), changed realtors at the beginning of September and the local market promptly collapsed. The phones went dead at our realtor's large office on Labor Day weekend and haven't started ringing again; our realtor currently has 6 listings and has had only 1 showing in a week. And there's still that whole hotel-next-door thing hanging over us, too, which may be contributing to the general paralysis at this end of town. We're going before the planning board in about 3 weeks, with some other neighbors who don't want it there either, in hopes that we can kill it. It will probably count against us that we've moved out already, but so be it. I think most of the neighbors who will be there are probably also selling, there are more signs up in the neighborhood than there were this spring. We moved out - into the house we bought when we thought we had the last offer totally nailed down, and it just wasn't cool with us to then screw OUR seller over - primarily because it was really sucking big wet hairy dog to be living in the house while it was being shown. We were all incredibly stressed out, even the dog. (And you know what happens when dogs get stressed!) Also, we wanted to get the move over with during the early fall since the weather is good and doesn't contribute to the fibro issues. I'm pretty much useless in the winter and it was going to be much harder to keep the house "show perfect", particularly managing "doggy odors" once the house got closed up tight in cold weather. We're looking forward to actually being able to cook a real meal once we get the kitchen unpacked; since a lot of our showings were in the "after work" time, we haven't really cooked since Memorial Day! BTW, chispa, thank you again so much for the paint, that was such a big help and so many people have commented so positively, espeially about the Monroe Bisque that was used in one bedroom as well as the kitchen and hallway. Hope you're settling well into your new digs and having more fun than culture shock. ;-) tauphidelt, I may find pictures of empty rooms kind of boring but it didn't stop us from buying this house, which had been vacant for over 2.5 years! (Rehab/flip gone very bad due to bad market timing, poor bahrstid took a bath.) Hope the third time's the charm for you, fairygirl!

It is nice to see you don't waste any space in your little patch of heaven. You really got them jammed in there, but in a very artful way. I also like the fact that it doesn't have an artifical look. Bless you, that flood looks like it was pretty bad! We had four typhoons (same as a hurricane) last year in a six week period, so I know what that's like! Great gardening. PF

Eliza Ann, the floods didn't harm the plants out front, near the street...but the rest of them (from the tree back to the house) are all new. We will have to see how they fare when the next heavy rainfall comes. Thank goodness it isn't often!

Carol, I'm only trying to follow in your footsteps (and BambooMary's too--have you seen her gardens? ~as well as others posting here)! Your gardens are inspiration to me!

Very nice of you to say, PF, as I consider myself an artist! My motto is "If you can see dirt, you don't have enough plants!" I have many shots of various vinettes in the garden. Oh MY on 4 typhoons~EEK! No, ours isn't as bad as it looks...just a slow-moving sewer right in front of our house...that can't handle lots of rain all at once. It goes down after an hour of the rain stopping.

I'm not always a fan of some of the sidewalk plantings folks do (some of them look to "jungle-y" for me, but yours is extremely lovely and tasteful. Excellent work! Thanks for sharing. :-)

Nancy, a blank canvas CAN be daunting! But once I'm into it, I'm on a roll! :D It took me quite a while to dig out the grass from that area (some you can see left in that 1st pic).

Flowergirl, funny you should say that...I actually prefer the PRE-jungle look...but most times JUNGLE conditions prevail. :P I don't want my gardens to look like everyone else's. I also want to OOO & AAAAH every time I come out of the house!

Hee hee, Vikki, I think I'd like YOU as my neighbor too! I'm hoping to plant something REALLY tall bewteen the ones I have!

You are a garden artist! What is name of daylily in last shot? I LOVE this type of garden in spite of my German hybridizer mentors who insist on lots of space & mulch between plants. You have a real eye for garden design!

Thanks so much for your kind remarks! I like to think I paint with the earth now rather than on paper (although it would be nice to get back to watercolors some day).

Daylily in the last shot is Hemerocallis 'Double Deseret'. Hey ~ I think I'll go gather up all the Daylily shots of this area over the past couple months & start a new post! Back in a bit!

Thanks, NB! That's Leonotis leonurus, Lion's Ear. Some seed must've fallen from parts I pruned off the plant in back (pictured below, growing taller than the edge of the roof), because I didn't plant it.

Yep, Springa, I was happy to get all of them in that narrow strip! Now, finding a spot for my foot between them in order to deadhead & maintain them is pretty tricky! :)
