Sweet potato slip question again

So out of the 12 sweet potato slips I received in my order from Burpee, only 6 have grown. I called Burpee and they offered to refund my money, but they're out of slips for the year and so can't send me replacements.

I read a lot about starting slips from a potato, but I'm wondering if I can just snip off one of the branches of one of the vines that has grown and root that in water? I'm assuming that would work, but I'm wondering if anyone's tried it successfully.

According to all my sources, I'm still good for the planting timeframe here - just trying to figure out how to get my hands on a few more plants quickly...
