If you have room for 5 or more that would make seedlings attractive, surely some of them will turn out well. If only 2 or 3 I'd want the greater assurance that comes with named cultivars. One of the proprietors of One Green World nursery said that all of the seedling fruit she'd tasted had been quite good. But with seedlings it wasn't certain that they would be able to ripen reliably in our NW climate. With a named cultivar you already know that they bear heavily enough and with fruit that is good enough that somebody thought it was worth hanging onto and sharing.

Thanks Larry, yes it's definitely much warmer outside than inside...we're still in the upper 80's to mid 90's and be stay in the 80's for at least another 6 weeks or more. I don't keep my a/c set too low or I would have to sell the house to pay my electric bill,lol... I'll try a couple in a day or two...some of them feel like they're starting to give a little when I gently squeeze them, although I'm not smelling the strong odor I've read about. Will update on how they taste.

Martin, it looks like you are inland a bit, this plant does not fruit well in a hot climate. In many U.S. locations, it is intended as a flowering shrub only. Try Murky's advice or try to determine if there are fruiting plants near you, this will tell you if it is possible to get fruit in your area. Adequate water during and the weeks after bloom can be critical.

A couple of years ago I bought pineapple guavas (Feijoa Sellowiana) at Houston Garden Centers and the cultivar was unknown as well. I can tell you, however, that they have produced fruit for me the last couple of years and I absolutely love them. They require minimal care and pruning should be done late fall/early winter as they produce on new growth. Molly
