possibly damaged my million bells trying to kill aphids
Comments (4)the plant itself looks fine.. its just that flower tissue itself is so delicate.. it cant handle the insult ... you are on the verge of loving it to death ... set it aside.. and but for proper water .... ignore it for 2 weeks... at that time.. it will have re-bloomed.. and hopefully be bug free ... it is stressed.. do not fert ... ken...See MoreAnts on Okra/ Aphids? attracted by aphids? really?
Comments (0)Ok I see ants swarming in my Okra beds for ever. I don't see any particular damage to the plants. Web search shows me the following as pretty much the universal explanation: Aphids produce secretions/honeydew which ants love. My objection to that theory: There are very few aphids on the Okra, hardly to talk about. However, all my cucurbits are loaded with millions aphids of all ages. Yet, I don't see any ants going to the cucurbits. The other explanation I have seen is: they suck the juice at the base of the blooms. But I don't really see many ants on the blooms although I see a few aphids on the blooms. Any other explanation? How to get rid of them? Spraying them kills only the ants that are physically present there and get direct contact. For every ant killed this way, there are thousands more. Tracking the ant trails I don't see any accesible ant mounds. So, how do i get rid of them for good? Thanks....See MoreAphids in lettuce growing under lights
Comments (2)Nothing kills them on living plants. The soap and neem oil only helps a little. Once infested it's best to rid the plant so it doesn't ruin the others. Perhaps bake your soil in the oven before planting anything to kill the bugs and eggs. Wrap aluminum foil around large mulch pieces and have that on top of containers around the plant... they are discouraged by this. Learn plant combos.... basil and mint planted with tomatoes discourages them. You just have to be careful and look into if mint planted too closely to some other type of veggie harms it. They don't like cat nip... you can plant that in a separate pot and have it near... some flowers they hate....See MoreHarvested some indoor kratky lettuce.. Aphids!
Comments (13)Here is what I did that seemed to help: I filled a 5 gallon bucket half way with water and a bit of dish soap. I put a few sprays of mild insecticidal soap in as well. Then I wrapped the net pot in foil to prevent the medium from falling out when I flip the plant upside down and dunk/soak it in the soapy water. After 10 minutes I thoroughly rinse the leaves, taking extra care not to wet the air roots, and put the plant back in it's Kratky home and turn a fan on to help dry up any water remaining on the leaves. So far, so good....See Moremichelelc
