Choosing The Right Soil For Your Grape Vineyard

The right soil quality is necessary in growing grapes. If taken for granted, grape vines may die or produce poor tasting grapes. So how can you check if the soil in your backyard is ideal for growing grapes?

If you are familiar with the different types of soil, all you have to do is simply identify which soil type is present in your garden. Ideally, the soil should be loam or sand because these soil types are well-draining - meaning, they drain soil well.

However, if you are not familiar with the different types of soil, you can always check the draining quality of the soil for yourself. Fill a small pot with your backyard soil and place a small hole underneath it. Fill with water and see how long it takes for the soil to go out on the bottom end of the pot. If you think it's taking too long for water to stay in the soil, then it's not good to use your garden soil and you will have to consider replacing it or mixing it with sand for better drainage.

Grape growing soil must also be slightly acidic. You can check for a tool that checks soil acidity at local garden stores. You will know if something's wrong with your soil's acidity if the leaves of grape vines that you plant turn to yellow. Several ways to "acidify" your soil include the use of decomposed manure and spreading it throughout your garden.
