Blueberry Flowers

Took some pics of various stages of flowers on Emerald and Sunshine Blue. Emerald is now about 50% bloom and Sunshine is just breaking a couple flowers! Cant wait man, it wont be long now;)

Should I remove the nasty looking leafs on Emerald? They are still halfway green and attached firmly to the branch. They must be contributing still right? I figure they are just unsightly but not hurting anything either?

They look great, mine are probably a week or so ahead of yours. I would leave the leaves.

Thanks for posting, sorry I should have been more clear in my post, everything I do it totally organic, the small lawn I have is 50/50 clover(red clover is in bloom right now), I do grow flowers, and the high school accross the street from me has a bee keeping project on their roof so I am pretty sure I am getting polinated, the problem is more that the immature fruit and flowering stems are drying up and falling off....Maybe I'll get out and take some pictures of the blue berry patch this afternoon....cheers!

Very nice! I guess I never really noticed WHEN my BB plants would flower until 2008. And during 2008 & 2009, my plants flowered the third week in October, and now the fruit has just begun to ripen. I've already snacked on a few berries. Yummy! I have Misty, Sunshine, O'Neil and Tophat.

Ugh, if you bought it from Home Depot it is most likely Bluecrop, a northern blueberry and not a Southern Highbush more adapted to our climate. It ticks me off that there are a dozen Southern Highbush varieties that do well here, and Home Depot still only stocks northern ones not adapted to our climate. You didn't mention what you have it planted in. Bluecrop is very pH sensitive and it is difficult to amend the soil to make it acid enough; I usually dig a hole and replace the soil with the Dave Wilson mixture or put it in a big pot. The blueberry huachuma mentioned is Sunshine Blue, which is a Southern Highbush and needs no pollinator. Bluecrop will cross-pollinate with it, but if you have lack of acid issues, the plant will die a slow, painful death.

I will leave them on. Im just hoping that Emerald isnt blooming to far ahead. Its got alot of flowers that already dropped the white part. When that happens does it mean it was pollinated or not pollinated fast enough? Even so it wont matter from here on out. I figure Sunshine is about 4 or 5 days from blooming out strong so I should be in business! I cant wait man! SO STOOKED!!!!!

Good to see the honeybee on there doing his job. I would leave the leaves too........they will fall off when ready. My plant will look like that in about 90 days, lol.

Probably were pollinated. I am still confused why our honey bees completely ignore the BB and your honey bees don't. Are you getting any new leaves yet?

All my SHB are just starting to put out some new leafs. Powder Blue is also. I havent seen abunch of honey bees just one or two here and there. It may pick up in the coming weeks when they are in full bloom. I sure hope so anyway! What time of year do the Bumble Bees come out and start working? I havent seen any yet but then again maybe I havent been out there at the right times.

BB,

Hear there are 100's of small bumble bees from sun up till dark working the flowers. A few larger bumble bees as well but mostly the small ones with the white mark on their faces.
