Comments (60)I can't find my log-in information judiegal made for me so I'll post under her name again. squirrelheaven, Savannah's appetite isn't bad she just doesn't like her food anymore. She still wants everyone elses food and treats. She's actually in the middle of getting her food changed over to the Wellness Core. She loves the Core and eats her old food just because it's mixed in with it. Her poops are good and firm which is a good sign. You're right about loose stools being common with food changes. When I read reviews of foods so many people quit on a good food because they think it's making their pets sick. Some people even leave bad reviews because it smells bad! I opted for a two week changeover for my dogs and they're both fine. I've been letting Savannah outside to run around and she has a ball. She runs and rolls in the grass, and when no one's looking she sneaks into the pool. When you go to check on her you can see foot prints leaving the pool and her rolling on the grass. I check on her frequently to make sure she's fine, she can get in and out of the pool easily but you never know. We do have a pool alarm that's been in its box for a while now, I might set it up. I'm trying to find a good vitamin/supplement to give her, something like an everyday senior multi-vitamin. Does anyone know of any good brands or products? She's doing well with the fish oil and co-q 10. I don't know if just a regular petco vitamin will do. I'm also looking for more natural flea and tick products. Thanks everyone. I'll try and get signed on with own account and give my input on other posts....See MoreGolden Retriever - Please tell me EVERYTHING
Comments (67)We may need to change the the nickname of forum members to TKO&TGO!! A mouthful but I think it's kinda true here! Claire- your pup looks a bit like my girl, Bailey. Sydney and friend are sure cuddly cute together! Must see Annakin! And love the name! Name choosing for a pup in a family takes on a life of it's own doesnt it? We took Cooper and Bailey for a swim on Sunday in a local lake. They love to retrieve balls from the water. It is their fav thing to do. as well as ours - we are going first thing on the 4th too. Pirula-We have found that not all goldens take to water- not like labs. We started early, after they bonded. A slow gentle approach with a small hard sided kiddy pool( Petsmart has them ) with a bit of water, add more gradually, never force them, is a good way to introduce them to water, we found. What fun! Our first golden,Cody, a rescue, would not go near the water and we wanted to make sure that these guys love the water. Of course, now our next house MUST have a pond with a bit of land or a lake house. Dreaming of it anyway. Happy 4th! Sue...See MoreRaising and breeding dogs
Comments (38)rthummer: I have had long haired dachsies for the last 20 years or so. I am currently down to one, a red long haired. She is currently 15. Most dachshunds have a very long life. I have heard numerous ones living til 16 or 17. We got our first longhaired dachsie when we lived in the city and I wanted a watchdog because our neighborhood was not great. But we could not have a large dog because of our small apartment. Then we rescued the second one at 8 years old, she lived until age 16. She had a bad first half of her life, we rectified that and she was the best dog and she loved our kids. I grew up with a german shorthaired pointer and a border collie. So I was not sure if I would like a little breed. But I love those funny little personalities, they are clowns. Funny how you get attached to YOUR breed. I think it is because it fits so well with your lifestyle whatever that may be. That is what makes owning a pet enjoyable, it is a companion that should fit your lifestyle. Not an accessory to be cool. I can't believe people could not find the dog they like except in a petstore, with everything online now, you can get in contact with breeders of most any breeds anywhere now. Good luck all....See MoreAnswer to why keep the dog outside.
Comments (43)I have one dog who prefers to live outdoors for most of the year especially when we aren't home, but we live in southern California. The other three are indoor dogs. They have a dog door, so it's up to them. The are baby-gaited out of part of the house when we aren't home. One reason we do that is that dogs that can go indoors during the day are a lot less likely to bother the neighbors with excessive barking. Some dogs smell doggier than others, but it shouldn't be a bad smell. I like the smell of a clean young dog although they do seem to get a bit riper as they get older. I used to have German shorthairs too and they were much doggier than the poodles we have now. In fact, since I use a vanilla scented shampoo, my dogs usually smell like freshly baked cookies. If your dog is smelly, there are a couple of things that you can do. If he's a "he" and not neutered, lop those gonads off!! He'll be healthier and less stinky. Make sure that his ears are clean and pink. A lot of dog stink is really dog ear odor and your dog may have a low grade yeast, mite, or bacterial infection. Your vet can help you set up a regular program of ear care. I really liky the Zymox products. Also, once he gets used to regular baths, he won't fight it and it will get easier for you. Fill his ears with ear cleaner, stop them up with cotton, and pop him in the tub every two weeks and you may find that he's a lot more tolerable indoors. Some dogs are slobbery, but maybe you should have your vet check your dog's teeth too just to make sure that he isn't having dental problems. It doesn't make much sense to me to have a dog and keep him outdoors, however, if you spend a substantial part of the day outdoors too, it might work for you. If you just slap a pan of food out there once a day and kind of remember to refill his water now and then, it would probably be better for both of you, if you found the big guy a new home....See Morebrendan_of_bonsai
