My garden update (pic heavy)

I decided to post an update on my first real garden. And I have to say I am quite impressed. Everything is about one month behind cuz we had the cpldest spring on record. But the last week we have definately made up for the poor spring with the good summer heat. My Cherokee Purples don't seem to have a lot of blooms, compared to the BW and ML. I used the fert which came with the EB but I think I will use tomato food in the box next year.

In real/homemade EB I have:

Very nice! How long has your corn been in the box? The past week's warm (now hot!) weather has helped mine out, too, but my corn is still nowhere near as tall as yours. Hopefully it will do some nice catching up now that temps are hitting the 90s during the day. Our May here in the Pac. N.W. was indeed on the cold and rainy side this year.

tina - isn't it great to have garden memories? I think gardens can evoke more memories because it encompasses the senses of sight, touch, sound, and smell. LL - I wish you could come see my garden in person! That would be so fun! In that bed, I grow most of my roses - a mixture of HT's, moderns, minis, OGRs, and climbers. Since I didn't know much about companion plantings, I just bought a package from Bluestone and planted in between the roses. I think my favorite are the asters and the catmint. I have iris from an old abandoned garden (there was a house there years ago). I love the spiky foliage and the thought those iris survived through so much neglect. schoolhouse - it's not a secret garden like yours, but since it's in the back and away from the house a little bit, it does have a secluded feel to it. I'm also trying to get some vines to grow up the gazebo so the feeling will be even more enhanced.

Thank you, everyone, for your nice comments. Jadie-Berry Smoothie is a more intense pink in spring and Georgia Plum is truly plum. GP is also pretty small in size. Both glow in the garden and are worth having, IMHO. GP packs quite a whollop of color into its little size. They both age differently (color wise) as well. Berry smoothie gets almost a grape color to it with very veiny leaves. DGregory-Ophir is quite a show stopper in the spring, but unfortunately it does go green in the summer. Still an attractive hosta, though and well worth growing. Mine is young yet. I've seen pics of mature ones and it's pretty amazing when it grows up. Dark Star is definitely worth growing. It's truly beautiful, which is why (I think) a lot of people have it. It gets darker in color later in the season, hence the name. Mocc-I think your boat with hostas idea sounds awesome! It could be such a focal point. Make sure to post pics if you actually decide to do it. I'd love to see how it turns out.

I am thinking that any company that puts "bulb" on the bag for a hosta, probably doesn't invest much interest in hostas. Hostas simply are not bulbs and shouldn't be labeled or called bulbs. Hostas have crowns and roots. I started out with hostas from bags, so I am not knocking the bags, just the labeling is suspicious and makes me suspicious about the accuracy of the plant id itself. It really might be a much nicer blue hosta.....it could be Blue Cadet, or Halcyon. If it's pretty and healthy, it won't matter, right? Elegans is often sold in bags, too.

I am so happy to see your pictures again! I was here back then, but mostly lurking, which I still do a lot because I am not very good about id-ing my plants since the dogs destroyed my labels and I gave up There are a few I know the names of, but not too many. You were one of my secret mentors when I started my hosta planting! I am sorry your 'When I Dream' was a disappointment, but there is so much to love about your gardens! Thank you for that!!!

Jodi,thanks for the nice comments. My corn has been in the box since about May 15thish. I damaged some roots when transplanting but thankfully I didn't damage the long tap root. Looks like they recovered just fine.

Can you tell me more about the earthbox corm? How many plants, how big container,etc?

Your homemade EB's look great. I've got a couple questions for you about them...

First, what size container are they? They look like the 17-gal containers...

And second, if that's the case, how many tomato plants have you got in that size container?

It seems most of the forum members using homemade EB's from 17-gal containers say you should only put 1 tomato plant in each, but yours seem to be doing just fine. Of course, all of this is a moot point if your containers are in fact the larger 31-gal size.... :-)

Everyone thanks for the kind words. I am really new to this and I have already identified several things I will do different next season.

Zachslc, I don't know what the deminsions of the EB but you can check the website. I have the recommended 16 plants and they are mighty thirsty.

nc-crn, I have a Kodak but I am not sure of the model. I am at work and when I get home I will get that for you. Funny thing is I have had it for about 4 years and was looking to upgrade.

tommysgarden, I believe they are the 17 gal. I am sure they are the medium size. Next year I will put one in only one of the containers and do a side by side comparison with two in a container. The maters are thristy as well but not like the corn.

After taking the pics I realized the green mater is more than likely two maters fuised into one. We will see when the day comes to harvest it.
