My Carolines have been in the ground for 2 full seasons now and have no problem with 100 degrees except that the fruit will get bleached out druplets if they are in the direct sun, the good news is the plant puts out plenty of leave to shade the majority of the fruit, it still drives me nuts though. I'm seriously considering putting up a 30% shade cloth structure over the beds to see what happens as soon as a pile of money falls out of the sky :) Oh, BTW, Royalty has no problems here with the heat, the fruiting is done before the nasty heat sets in and the plants do just fine in the heat.

So will Caroline raspberries do good in the shade here?

Well, I don'tknow, your sun intensity and mine, cloud cover and such, may be significantly different than mine. My plants aren't in full sun all day, some shade in the morning but full sun thereafter. The 30% shade idea is just a stab at getting rid of the bleached druplets, shade cloth comes in varying densities of shade to choose from.

From a disease standpoint, it would be best to have sun on the plants first thing in the mornings to dry out any dew or other moisture as quickly as possible; other than that I've read that raspberries do best in full sun. My reds and the Royalty seem to do quite well with the morning shade.

Right. Along with Michael357 said... It depends on how much shade. If it were full shade, I wouldn't do it. But, if get at least 50% sun, I'd think you'd be Ok. Raspberries are tolerant of shade to a point... but, in full shade, you'd get very small and very few raspberries, and they'd be quite susceptible to any little thing that came along. -Glenn
