Apple Espalier Update

My Apple Espalier is now four years in training.

On the right is Dorsett Golden and on the left is Gala.

Dorsett Golden spurs are already putting out bloom clusters. Ten days of 85 degree weather made for a VERY short dormant season....One week to be exact!

The Dorsett Golden has produced far more fruit than the Gala over the years. I get two crops from the Dorsett Goldens. I suspect the amount of sun and chill hours is the difference.

Still it makes for a nice entrance to the house.

Great job Jack!

The Gala will increase in production in the coming years, but I'm afraid will never match the maniac Dorsett Golden.

What side of the house is this on? Keep on the watch for borers, as being exposed like this the trunks are prime targets for sunburn and resultant borer attacks. I'd hate to see you lose all that hard work.

PS- where did you get the cool little plant tags?

Honey fungus, Armillaria mellea root rot, is present worldwide throughout temperate regions and the disease has been reported in all of the 50 states. It's there, whether you recognize it as a honey mushroom or not. There are many species of Armillaria and while A. mellea is generally the culprit, other closely related species have also been included in the generic application of 'armillaria root rot'.

I did what you are describing with lower branches. If they are going in the right section why wouldn't you use them. Seems to have worked fine so far several years down the road.

It looks like fireblight. My Enterprise does the same thing but always grows past it. I'm a novice, so take it with a grain of salt. I've read that you should dip you pruner in alcohol between cuts to prevent transmitting disease. Perhaps someone else can chime in to confirm.

Thanks for the nice comments.

The apples have a south exposure.

The markers are from Gardenmarkers.com
Very reasonable priced.

We have guests over to the house all the time.
The markers saved me time repeating myself as to what the various trees and plants are throughout the garden.
The date of planting also helps me remember when I put them it.

I started getting them for my wife's rose garden.
Then I started adding them to the Japanese Garden and Cactus Garden.

I am working on a Fan Trained, Red Baron Peach and Flavor Delight Aprium. I will try and post pictures in a few days.
