I want to get 2 goats,

I think hubbys is gonna need to get anew horse.We bought 2 tennessee walker gelding years ago.They are in thier 20s.The one he goes on horseback riding trips pretty often.He loves that horse but they are almost 30.

Id love to breed the texas longhorns but My health made a bad turn,I go for dialysis 3xs a week.I need a kidney,he works construction ,his own company so theres not much time for extras right now.That was so much fun watching them at calving time.You never knew what you were getting,a brown bull,a red cow youd get a black&white calf.

I hope to get some pheasant chicks in the spring to put in the freezer in the fall.

I might try a couple of chickens in the orchard to see if they can get the grasshoppers under control. Or, I might get some guinea hens instead. I'd prefer the guineas, but the orchard isn't covered, so the chickens would be much less financial loss if the eagles got them.

If you get goats, have secure fencing. They can be escape artists and they are notorious for destroying plant life. Make sure they can't get access to any plants you want to keep.

I heard guineas,I heard have the habit of running off.I had a flock in my farm last year,left as fast as they came.
I had a big goat years ago.

No Brendan, LGD's don't work like that. Most of it is instinct, with a %age learned, such as normal puppy behavior of not chasing or playing rough. If we were talking any other type of dog, I'd agree with you. But we are talking LGD's-Pyr, Anatolian, Akbash, Maremma, and a host of other Livestock guardians-LGD bloodlines only no mixes of outside non-lgd bloodlines. These dogs bond with their charges, be it livestock, fowl, or people, and they become a pack or a herd, whichever you prefer. Probably the only reason a well bred lgd would eat one of their charges would be the threat to the herd-the sick one-and then they would normally segregate it, and after natural death eat. It eats it because it became a threat to the herd simply by being sick or dead, which would lure predators to the herd. This behavior is often mistaken for them killing it by newbies to ownership. No, they are not like other dogs. These dogs actually take care of their charges, be it keeping it warm, or cleaning up after a birthing, or staying with an animal stuck in the fence. Oftentimes they eat every other or third day, similar to wolves, who are their mortal enemy. If you ever have the opportunity to observe their interaction with their charges, please do. I've seen a pup actually remove a pail off of a goats head once-truly amazing the care that was taken, the thought process, and the sincere concern for the doe. Of course your scenario can happen, but it is highly unlikely and improbable, and of course there would be no need because the dog would have food readily available at his/her leisure. Brendasue

We have some very large Oaks to remove. Two are storm damaged, only two real branches left. The other is close by, rotten in the center, some dead limbs, but has a nice green top every year. They are on both sides of the large truck parking pad, husband is afraid they will fall or drop limbs on his trailers. We are working on various scenarios, will need special equipment to take off branches before felling the trunks. Tall trunks, with other trees, the barn, HOUSE, in the way to dropping them. One is a Burr Oak, has the cutest acorns each year, with fuzzy caps. I have a number of shrubs I dug up to be out of the tree removal, will have to go back in. Then I need to put in another couple trees for replacing these. I am thinking of Beeches, not common locally. Plenty of room to grow big there. Need to add dirt at all the gates, have tracked it away so we are seeing geotextile fabric again. Extra dirt keeps the gate areas from being mud pits with animals going thru daily. Have to get the wood sides on the stock trailer in case we want to use it this winter. Not planning to use it, but sometimes you want to. Warmer with wood over the slats. Husband has some other projects, will have to help when he gets at them. The garden shed needs organizing too, that will be a good days work on a warmish day. Have just been piling stuff inside as I go on to other jobs. Have a couple harness racks to hang up. He plans to do a lot more with the horses, so handy racks will have stuff right at hand for him. Young horses are getting more reliable, so they will be learning more this winter, then they can go out and be seen next summer. Lots of hours in developing young animals. Most winterizing stuff is done, I feel PREPARED! Still have to net the pond, prevents leaves in the bottom. Cleaning the filter often, trying to get any loose stuff cleaned out. Much harder to clean the filter once the nets are on. Bird feeders are up, but still lots of seeds about, so not feeding them yet. Holes fixed in privacy fence so small dog can't escape the yard. Mulched those things needing it. Have to rabbit fence some shrubs they really find tasty. I feel guilty not enjoying the sunshine while we have it. Once cold and gray days come, then I can work on inside projects like harness cleaning and conditioning, sewing. LOTS of leather that needs attention.

You designed you current home. You know what works about it, what doesn't. You know what you like, what you don't. No faceless stranger that's never met you will ever come close to designing anything half so appropriate for you lifestyle and personality as you can yourself. Doubly so when that stranger's idea of country life is either riding to the hounds on an autumn morning, or a two acre 'mini ranch' with a hamster, a llama and a pot belly pig. And until you've lived in the stranger's plan for a few years, you won't really know if it suits you or not. I think pre-planed homes are fine for suburban dwellers with no real tie to thier land. If they build a house, decide they don't like it, they can always sell it, move down the block, start over. For most rural people, 'home' is a place, not a building. That's why my build has been so incredibly stressful: if I don't get this right, I can't just sell it and move on, I'll have to level it and start over. I often lie awake at night, wondering if I've overlooked anything... dog area and pet door in the laundry to keep the mess out of the kitchen, coat room off the back door to hold my chore coats, ski coats, town coats. Less lawn to mow, more garden to grow. Natural light in every room. Hydrant by the back door for really dirty boots.... By all means, look at plans for ideas that might not have come up with on your own, but hire yourself as you own chief designer.

We will be getting a calf in the spring for 4-H. They call it Prospect Beef, has to be under 500# by Fair. You sell them to folks wanting a meat animal for next year. DD had one last summer, he was pretty nice and she made money on him at Fair Auction.

Not sure if she will be doing Market Lambs for 4-H again or not. She is looking for a job, getting ready for College expenses. May not have enough time for everything. You have to handle your animals a lot, so they show well, walk them to get conditioned for meat production.

That is it for new animals, and these would only be staying for the summer.

We have a recently purchaed 3yr old horse, who will be getting worked with under saddle. She has about 30 days on her this summer, so she needs a lot more time to develop her "power steering". She will be 4 next summer, more ready to learn by then. She seems quite nice, just very immature yet. Talking of doing some camping and trail riding with DD and all the young horses. Nothing like a long day under saddle to take out the silliness! Glad to stop and stand for a while, no dancing along, walk is easier. All about learning to work. Horses do sleep hard at night after going 10-15 miles, just like the kids!!

I only have two goats so I teether them when I take them out to pasture. Mine are'nt very strong so I can chain them to a concrete block and move the block around the pasture. I make sure the chain doesn't reach any of my fruit trees. Laying hens are next, but I'll have to hide them since my wife hates anything with feathers.

we've never had goats, just steers, sheep and pigs. However, a neighbor bought several goats last summer to run loose in a fenced-in woodlot to clean it up, and they have done just that.
Also know people who raise them for their milk.
Anyone ever hear of fainting goats? They're very interesting..one of my husband students raised them.

I dislike seeing them bred for their novelty. It's a genetic defect, actually. Yes, I've seen them....had a friend who raised them. I raise animals for their use, and genetic defects are something I wouldn't want bred into a bloodline. Speaking of goats, I've been considering some dairy goats. My daughter had goats when she was here, but more for pets than anything else. I ran the milk cow idea past my husband and he nixed it big time. LOL. So, I figure if I ask for cows, he'll be relieved if I settle for goats.
