Just saw your discussion, 6 years later. :-) You may not still have the plant by now. Def sumac, agree with the coloring on the base of the leaves being characteristic, and the legginess comes from shade. It may be too shady there to flower. Correct that both males and females will flower but only females will produce fruits. Also --- in 2016, I dug up one from the side of the road that I knew was female because it had fruit. I transplanted it into my yard and it was fine and healthy, but for some reason, the thing never bloomed until this year, 2020, 4 years later. No idea why. I'm doing backflips over it finally flowering.

I have noticed the same about the gsts being focused on "getting out" and nothing else, lol, I have yet to see one nectar on the lantana that I put in the reptarium when I have to keep them in a while depending on when they eclose, I don't think I have had to keep one over 24 hrs yet though, or not much longer than that anyway. You are so right about this forum slowing down, lol, this is my first "season" raising caterpillars, and I think those last cats I found were late babies, so to speak, I haven't seen anymore eggs since I found those cats. I wonder do the females that are released late still lay eggs even at this time of year? Hopefuly if they do, they won't lay them in my yard, hehe, I am hoping that I will be done when these last two cats I have pupate. Hopefully they will do so before I leave for Miami, in less than two weeks, or I will have to find a "sitter" for them. Sadly, I did lose two last instar cats this weekend, still clueless as to what happened to them, one of them was about 6 wks old, but he appeared to be perfectly healthy, I was shocked when I saw something was wrong because he was doing so well. Totally unexpected! And the other one that died, had already purged and began process of preparing to pupate, he either fell out of his sling or did not make a sling, and flipped upside down, eventually he got detached from the silk pad anchoring his lower body, he laid on his side and moved around for a while, and he was still in j looking form, and had even shrunk so that his body looked really segmented, if that makes sense, but he never pupated, I guess sometimes, nature steps in and takes its course, no matter what you do, who knows.

This is definitely a hen. You can tell by the head. Males would be much brighter red and blue. The beard in the front of the chest will be on males. The length of it depends on age. Females are much more brown and males more black. All Turkeys have that thingy on their head. You can tell the sex of a Turkey by the poop and the tracks. The females are a circular clump and the males looks like the letter J. I've always wondered if you could tell on some other species birds as well. With the tracks the females tracks are longer than wide with the middle toe the longest. The males have equal length toes and tracks are about as wide as they are long. Hope this helps Cathy

You might have seen a pair of hens escorting their poults. They (and quail) often do the army-style platoon with one adult at point and the other one at tail gunner. Or a male that didn't know how to read his rule book. :) West of here, the pattern is to see hen and poults in a family flock, and then as the poults get larger (and the hens less protective) a couple of hens will join up, with maybe a male or two, into a foraging flock with the poults. They LIKE being in flocks, and if the food is plentiful, can be in flocks of 20+ birds.
