Anyone have fertile duck eggs???

I have a Rouen female who just became broody on her hidden nest of 12 INFERTILE eggs. I'm wanting to find some fertile eggs to add to it, so there will at least be a CHANCE for her to have some babies.

I'm wondering if any of you might have any that you would be willing to sell to me, and ship to me. (I'm in SW Missouri).

Hi Suzie,

I would love to send you some of mine! I would think they are very fertile since there is a lot of action going on but I have not tried hatching them out to know for sure. They are barnyard "hippie" ducks, I only have two females so it would take about a week I would think to collect a dozen. Let me know if you'd like me to start setting them aside (no charge for the eggs!) I would be happy to share them.

Also do you want me to take some pictures of them so you could see what the parents look like?

Thanks for your kind words over the loss of our geese. Incidentally, we were advised by one of the best breeders in the country to yes, add a couple more of similar age if possible and don't wait too long either. They're flock creatures, like herd animals and feel secure in numbers. We're looking into a few more.

As for duck eggs, we have four bonafide indian runners, 2 ducks, 2 drakes. Not show quality, but hearty and more reliable layers than our hens. Not sure if you're familiar with the breed - real cartoon like characters though - like a bowling ball on flippers, always on the go - single file. We call them "the little batillion". Can send pics if you like.

If you're are interested, and can give us directions on how to send them, we'd love to help. Runners don't normally go broody (too busy) so our fertile eggs have quite the opposite problem.

Look on the Internet to find out if Magpie ducks will incubate (set on) their own eggs. As long as they are not in with a lot of other birds, I suspect that she would succeed in hatching her own. Sometimes they lay an egg every other day, until they reach what they consider to be a full clutch. Before they are actually starting to set on the eggs seriously, you'll notice that she will start building the nest and lining it with fluff from her own breast. This is, of course, if she will set on her own. I reckon that those eggs will be good for at least two weeks, while she gathers more. If you decide to use an incubator, I'd recommend one with a thermostat, hydrometer, forced air and egg turner; that is if you can afford it. I used to purchase the Styrofoam cheapo incubators, about every 12 months. They would get contaminated during hatching and after a couple of uses there was no way to use them successfully, as the eggs would become contaminated and cause sick, deformed chicks. Ducks require a bit more humidit'y for incubation, so you'd have to research that. I have hatched duck eggs under a broody hen. That works. But once they hatch, you have to take the ducklings and raise them yourself. The hen doesn't "speak the same language" as the ducklings. They don't communicate well and the ducklings abandon the hen after less than a day. Hope this helps, George

Since she's a wild duck she's a seasonal layer and not really designed to keep laying one clutch after another. Ensure that she's eating a well balanced diet with sufficient protein and calcium. A layer feed and lots of greens should be sufficient. Wild ducks are excellent mothers and nesting/brooding instincts are very strong. Maybe someone else in your area raises ducks and has some fertile eggs your duck could raise. You could sell or keep the ducklings when they're grown.

Yes, she will set on a nest of nonfertile eggs. The sex drive of male mallards is incredible. Especially this time of year when the hens are all setting and are unavailable, or the unattached males are just dieing to get some action. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if they flew in for a romp every day, assuming that you have an uncovered pen, which you must, or why would you even think that they could have bred her? The big danger with that set up, is that she is dead meat if any predators happen by. They don't call them sitting ducks for nothing, although the proper term is "setting". If the eggs are fertile, you can tell now by candling them with a flashlight. If any are clear, throw them out, leaving the others, and get rid of the ball. If they are all clear, take them, so she'll start laying for you again. You should also know that Campbells, as a laying breed, are notoriously poor mothers. You'll find many exceptions, and people delight in bragging that they have one who sets full term and actually raises the young to boot. Still, those are the exceptions, and in general, even if they do set, they have a high rate of abandonment of eggs, or of ducklings, if they get that far.

Humidity consistency is very important. I've always mist the eggs after turning them starting about the 8Th day. According to my notes the humidity was 85% & Temp 99.5F from day 1 to day 25 there after increase humidity to 95% and drop temp to 98.5F for the last 3 days. Turn the eggs 3 x day first week, then 5 x day second week, then 7 x day to day 25-finish the last 3 days without turning. when you candle the eggs at 28 days, you should be able to see 3/5Th dark 2/5 should appear light. The dark side should have an irregular shape and the bill should be pointing up into the lighter side. You should be able to see movement and hear peeping. All birds can lay eggs with or without a male; so the answer is no. There are a lot of things you'll need to know before the next batch is set. How to store the eggs before setting them-What temp to store at-Turning the stored eggs-to clean or not to clean (how to do it correctly)-how long they can be stored? How to prepare the incubator-cleaning/disinfecting it? Washing your hands before and after handling the eggs. As you see the questions can go on and on. Google "hatching Duck Eggs". Yes, yes, yes, to both of you. I have no idea how to send them, but I'll do some checking and get back to you, hopefully tonite. And I'd love to see pics of both of your ducks. Sheila, didn't you once post pics of yours?

Either post them here or send me emails. I'm not looking for any particular breed or pedigree...just some little quackers so my girl can be a mommy. The more interesting the better!

Hi Suzie, I will try to take some pictures tomorrow, my ducks are a mix of khaki cam's -rouen and one production white. They also have some runner in them. I used two eggs in a dinner recipe and believe they were both fertile due to the circle on the yoke having a white swirl in the center.

I will start putting some aside, how many would you like?
