Can't find any good chicken wire........

Hi everyone,

I try to always have a good supply of chickenwire around. I'm always using it for something. This year, when I went to buy some, I discovered it all looks whimpy........like it's a really lightweight gauge of wire.

Have any of you noticed that too? I've looked at all the home improvement centers, and the Tractor Supply store, and it's all that lightweight stuff........which wouldn't hold up very well. Have you seen any of the good stuff anywhere? Thanks.

We buy the rolls of "hardware cloth". The holes are smaller than with the chickenwire and it is much stronger! Also, it doesn't seem to rust. I also use it for everything. I make small cages to surround new little shrubs and trees that I don't want the chickens to scratch around.

We get large rolls of it at Home Depot.

I've used that on my chicken coop. It seems to be alot more expensive than chicken wire. I might have to go to that if I can't find some stronger chicken wire. I have to surround most of my younger trees with it.....and all the trees that the beavers are attracted to.

Thanks, Sharon. KWL pretty much shows it all but the walk-in pantry. (just linked it on a new pantry thread) I have house pictures scattered here and there but I try not to post "decent" pictures since they've turn up elsewhere on the internet in the past. The ceiling in the kitchen is 9ft. The great room peaks at about 26ft (or 28ft, I've gone blank) and the MBR peaks at 22ft. Our lower level has ceilings just over 10.5ft and it really makes a difference in the feel down there - more like a home, not a basement.

I know the feeling! Cutting our yard in :30 minutes and 1.5 hr to trim was not making since with lots of concrete the issue. 1. I used a Sears Electric trimmer 1972–80 and can not remember the line breaking once. The cord and weather encouraged me to use a donated gas WeedWaker and Green Machine about 1982-02 (too short/heavy). 2. The weight encouraged me to get an Echo SRM 210 in 02. I c/n master not too much breakage per trim. 3. I decided I needed a Straight Shaft Hard Blade Trimmer mainly and converted my Echo SRM to that. 4. With Plenty Echo Power Heads, I now have the hard Blade, String, Split Straight shafts and Round-Up. 5. The Hard blade is my Work Horse at an angle (1 hr) vs straight allows trimming every 3rd 30:min cut. 6. The Round-Up and String allows touch-ups in tight areas flat vs soil erosions. 7. The Split shaft is string only back-up now but will serve as hard when I "find" that attachment. LOL! 8. I modified/trimmed the Hard Blade Attachment to resist holding damp dirt and added a larger clear Lexan Plastic Guard.

FWIW - when ringing the bark below the point at which you want roots to form, there is no real advantage when you include the the zip ties. You'll get the same accumulation of photosynthate and auxin in tissues immediately above the upper ring cut whether or not you use a tourniquet. Rina - ToC mentioned an important point. Auxin stimulates root growth, but its flow is polar, meaning it flows downward in phloem tissues. That means there will be a higher concentration of auxin on the underside of a horizontal or diagonal branch. If you layer that branch while it's in a horizontal or diagonal position, you're likely to get roots ONLY from the bottom of the branch. To 'fix' this (especially important if you're layering a bonsai subject) you should prop the pot up with shims a few days before you prepare the layer so the branch you intend to layer is vertical. After you have constructed the layer, keep the branch you're layering vertical to avoid accumulation of auxin at the lowest point on the cutting and a 1-sided root system. You can return the pot to its normal orientation while watering, but as soon as you're done watering you should return it to the orientation you calculated would ensure it's vertical until you separate it from the main tree. The same is true if you're starting cuttings. E.g., if you want your new tree from a cutting to exit soil in the pot at an angle, cut the proximal end of the cutting at an angle so it's as close to perfectly horizontal as possible when it's stuck. For fencing our property and for our chicken run, we have used "stucco wire", used on sides of houses. We found this was sturdy and stood up better then the chicken wire.

I have been using traditional chain link fence largely because with all the development in these parts it is readilly available to haul away. It works for me, I know that with regard to the chickens the hole size will allow smaller varments in, such as rats or weasels, but these are not a problem here. Anyone have any notion why this is not a good idea?

I never use chicken wire for chickens....lol! It would never hold up to varmints. My run is covered with utility wire (12 guage), and then covered with 1/2" hardware cloth. I do use chicken wire around my garden, only to keep out the bunnies. I mostly use the chicken wire to protect my trees from bunnies and deer.
But all the stuff I'm seeing out there is like aluminum foil......it's totally too flimsy.
And sometimes the chicken wire I use around my garden lasts forever, and sometimes it rusts in one year. Seems like the way they make chicken wire is very inconsistent.
Hmmmmm....stucco wire? I'll have to look into that.
I do use concrete reinforcing wire for tomato cages......but it's pretty substantial, with 6x6" holes.

I use chainlink around the outside of chicken wire. Chicken wire only keeps chickens in. Doesn't keep anything else out.
