They look great. I just picked 61 zucchini, 73 crookneck squash, and 16 cucumbers today. It's definitely squash season. BTW...I would definitely recommend Burpee Tasty Green Hybrid Cucumbers. They are the best that we've ever had.

Ok, I picked my first group of veggies this morning. How exciting! I had the cucumber with my salad for lunch. Why is it that fresh cucumbers taste so much better than when you buy them "fresh" at the store?:) Anyway, I just wanted to share. I wasn't sure how productive my squash would be after the problems it had a couple of weeks ago, but things are definitely looking promising! :) Thanks to everyone for your advice! Ally

You are spoiled for supermarket veggies now, Ally. You can't buy a cucumber like the one you grew. They are so good!

Crookneck squash is my favorite. It is so much tastier than the other summer squashes and I never see it in the store. I guess the straight kind stacks better. :-) Slice it and saute in butter until there is just a touch of browning. Olive oil probably is good also.

Whichever summer squash you grow, if you grow a lot you have the luxury of picking it at a small size.

Thanks all! I had the cucumber in a salad today and the squash and some of my green tomatoes I fried...I know, I should be ashamed, but I wanted my hubby to enjoy them too, and he loves fried stuff. I had a few pieces of squash raw too, though, and it was divine! :) I even saved a few slices for tomorrow's salad to go with the rest of my cucumber. :) Thanks for the suggestions. It appears I'll have PLENTY more squash to experiment with in the weeks to come. :)

The cucumber is a Tasty Green from Burpee. They are really great; very small seed cavity, prolific, and great tasting. This is the first year we've grown them and they are now our favorites.

Here is what we do with zucchini and summer squash...

Cut it in about 2" pieces
Saute with onion, italian seasonings, olive oil and sometimes some olives. Saute them only to the point of just starting to soften.

Hmmm...picked another 2 grocery bags full today....

Slice those 6" crookneck in half, lengthwise, then steam them 'till done. Butter, salt, pepper and eat. You get the full flavor of the squash.

I like to slice the crooknecks lengthwise, brush with olive oil, add salt and grill.

Brush sliced zuch, summer squash with olive oil & butter, minced garlic, herbs and sea salt, then grill solo or on kabobs. Also fresh in salads.

Hi everyone ! The squash and zucchini have been producing like crazy, we're eating squash several times a week ! Just to change it up from our favorite way ( sauteed with onions ) I made a squash casserole with parmesan and mozzarella , garlic and bread crumbs on top ... yummy ;-)

Last night for din-din, we had squash for the 3rd day in a row. First zucchini bread, then sauteed with onions, but last night was the absolute best. I put some chicken in the oven, added carrots and onion and baked until nearly done. At the very last, I tossed in some diced zukes and squash and finished baking for another 10 - 15 minutes. When I uncovered the dish, my 8 year old gasped. The colors were amazing and the squash was the best ever. Yum!

I am SO jealous.

Here is zone 4, my squash plants are about a foot across. And, my cucumbers are just getting their first set of leaves beyond the first permanent leaves.

Probably 20-30 days before squash. But, my first tomato is on the vine. Peas are now flowering.

Those of us in short season areas are highly jealous of those of you that are so warm so early.

Slice zuccini, eggplant, summer squash vertically in one-inch slices. Drizzle with olive oil, sea salt, and pepper then broil or grill until bubbly and golden. Do a bunch of it. Some you can eat for supper. The rest, drizzle with Italian dressing, fold and pack into plastic containers and keep in fridge. Every time you make a sandwich, put some of those on it. Really good. But I wouldn't put it on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. :)

Maybe just a hair too late on harvesting this...be assured that as soon as I set the camera down, I cut this one off and took it in to the steamer!

Like others, my crooknecked squash is doing very well so I won't post a solo picture of them. This is more like my garden "in progress". I struggle to keep up with weeding, even with cardboard and black plastic help! The biggest problem is bindweed, so I focus mostly on handweeding it and get the other weeds when the soil is really wet.

experienced gardener, but I noticed your using cylinder blocks
around you tomatoes. I use them too, and i have the holes
upright. The holes are great for planting herbs or flowers.
By the way what variety tomatoes are those?.

I had the cinderblocks turned the other way last year with the holes up, but I just couldn't keep the weeds from sprouting in them since I used only about six of the holes for marigolds. Then one of my melon plants escaped the trellis and deposited a canteloupe in one of the holes. By the time I discovered it, it was stuck too tight to get out, and it was a wasted melon -- attacked by munchers from beneath. So I decided to turn them the other way this year.

I have several varieties of tomatoes in that jungle, Big Beef, Delicious, Brandy Boy, Neves Azorean Red, Aunt Gertie's Gold, Rutgers, and an oxheart. I may scatter the tomatoes throughout my garden next year to keep them separate since I have several lengths of cattle panel that I use for beans, cukes, & melons.
