use this for fruit tree borers anyone?

After BorSol was taken off the market I am at a loss as to what to use on the trunks for fruit tree borers (peach, cherry, apricot,plum. I bought what was suggested now to use by a local nursery: Bayer Advanced Tree & Shrub Protect & Feed. The active ingredient is listed as: Imidacloprid 1.47% & to be used on fruit,nut bearing trees that will NOT have the fruits/nuts used off the tree for 12 months. Used to water around the trunk, root area.

Also, what can be used to plug up holes in tree trunks where a limb was cut off & left a hole (size of a lemon) ... something like a cement or a 'mud'? to fill the hole to prevent water from entering it & rotting?

Is it OK to keep painting the trunks with white paint as the trunk enlarges & splits the previous paint? (Used to keep the sun from scalding the trunk bark).

i would NEVER use a systemic on anything i eat.. and i will yell.. I DONT CARE WHAT THE MARKETERS SAY ...

A HEALTHY TREE...oops.. will heal itself.. otherwise known as encapsulation.. ponder this.. wood needs to remain dry or it will rot.. prove to me... how anything you put on top.. will not trap moisture below???

i dont believe in painting either .. but it seems fruit peeps do so.. all the power to ya ....

I would agree with not using any systemics on any edible fruits/plants (Many of them are now being tied to honeybee colony collapse too. The bees IMO are just the canary in the coal mine).

For most trees you need nothing to seal a pruning wound, the tree will take care of it. This assumes that healthy wood was removed, and done properly so that the growth area at the base of the limb was left intact. Look online for some diagrams of how to do this. If you must use something, the old black oil based tree wound compounds are still available.

As for borers, there are quite a few options for killing them once they are in a tree, from running a wire up their hole, to injecting predatory nematodes or insecticides in the hole. General prevention is harder. One source claims that white interior latex mixed with spackle (sheet rock joint compound) to s spreadable mix, painted on the base of the tree works. Others claim fine gravel at the base of the tree will deter borers. And their are traps for the adult borers too.

Doan's nursery in Belt line road in Irving has many cocktail fruit trees. I would suggest to check this nursery for fruit trees, flowering plants and tropical plants. Be prepared to wait to get help and also make sure that you are getting the right plants because many of the plants don't have labels/pricing. I also noticed that many fruit trees are from California growers, so not sure how they would grow in DFW. Moreover, they do not give any kind of warranty to the trees.

Hi Don, welcome aboard. I have heard that tangle trap applied liberally to the tree bases will make it impossible for the moths to land to lay eggs, and even if they succeed the tiny babies will be stuck in the goo. I have not tried this myself but next spring I am going to give it a go. My current method is I look for frass at the tree base and dig out the borer with a knife if I see it. Its a lot of work and not completely reliable. If you have enough trees you may be able to buy mating disruption lures and make some progress with them. But that route can be expensive. Scott

mynxr...I took my family to the outer banks this past summer and as always I look at and mentally study the vegetation / trees etc everywhere I go. While there and being in awe of the amount of salt in the air I got to thinking about fruit trees. I stayed in Hatteras and no way could I see a fruit tree surviving that environment. Farther up (north) past Buxton a bit where some trees with some size start to show up I began looking for fruit trees...anything. even an old apple. I saw nothing. When leaving I searched in every yard etc all the way until I deviated west on 64...again...nothing. After just a few miles on 64 though fruit trees started showing up in yards everywhere..the air was now clear too. Didn't have that foggy haze of salt laden air. I just don't think most fruit trees and especially pommes would survive that salt air. Plus. it seems that coastal soil is pretty devoid of what is necessary to grow a fruit tree. I could be wrong though and am interested in hearing other answers as it had me curious while there. On a different note, I bet you guys go through automobiles in a hurry. Every piece of ferrous metal I seen was terribly rusted, even the A/C unit on my rental was nearly eaten away and it was a model designed for coastal enviroments. I couldn't wait to get that crap washed off my car when I got home. Love it down there though.

I won't claim to be an expert but I do have some experience with avocado trees. I do know you need 2 avocado trees to pollinate the blooms to produce fruit. I started my trees from seed in the early spring of 2009, so they've been through 2 seasons of growth. They are about 3-4 feet high, have multiple branches, and this is the first year they are expected to bloom. I've noticed a few budding blooms on both trees already and I hope they produce fruit. They will not survive outside during the winter so make sure they have a sunny window to hang out by during the cold months. Avocado trees are a tropical tree so don't overwater, and you might have to provide shelter if there are too many days of rain. Good luck and I'll post in a few months if there are any fruit.

Hey Gator are you using a translator? No pun intended. Your syntax is funny as is the case with computer translators. Maybe it's just a little late in the evening.
I've had borer issues on my plums and after applying the paint/sheet rock mix along trunk and major branches the borer made its hole up top of the apex at the edge of the paint. I added Rotenone and lime/sulfur to mine. What's the main ingredient in Bug Juice?
Would anything else cause the oozing?

Scab is only a foliar problem, I believe. FB can cause a little oozing on pears and apples but not stonefruit, of course.

I wouldn't use the Bugjuice unless it's labeled for edibles, and I don't think it is.

Vigorous trees are seldom killed by borers here in southeastern NY. I use Lorsban.

Mothballs are recommended for crown borers. Put them close to the trunk and pile dirt over them. Nylon screen can work as well. Branch borers are more difficult.

Google shows the active ingredient in Bug juice is deltamethrin (a simple pyrethroid). It's also the same a.i. in Decis.

OK. so it's safe although illegal to use if the label doesn't say you can use it on edibles.

I shouldn't have followed my statement that vigorous trees seldom die here of borers with saying I use Lorsban as they are two distinct points. Unsprayed trees that are vigorous are much more resistant to death by borers IME.

I'll second mothballs for borers in the trunk. I used to have them in my peach trees, but don't anymore now that I use mothballs.
