double yolks .... twins??

Just curious, but can an egg with double yolks ever produce twin chicks? I saw on TV the other night a chicken with 6 legs .... did it start out to be triplets? I sure miss those old contented hens ... always happy!

Have seen claims of a double yolker hatching, but, never saw proof! Its usually some one on a poultry message board making the claim??
Considering the millions of eggs hatched each year, there are bound to be freaks/monsters hatch, many do not survive, some survive for a short time and some live quite a while. The same thing happens in all classes of animals, look at co-joined humans, et cetera.

This is confusing to me because I always thought the yolk was consumed by the chick before hatching and that is why they don't need food for 2/3 days. Now I am really curious!

I would think if you either buy them day old or hatch your own and keep them confined for about a month or so they will stay sort of close. Although you did say you have 10 acres so you probably want them to wander around. Have you tried McMurrays? they sell them in minimum of 30 birds per shipment. I only have 1.25 acres so I figured I would get about 6 or so and that is where the problem comes in. Buying from a hatchery I would have to buy too many and I can not find anyone locally. Ebay sellers sell the eggs but I do not have nor do I want to invest in an incubator and my only other option with that is to get a broody hen. Now I find out the hen already has to be broody before you can expect them to hatch some eggs. sheesh! So many complications!! Here is a link that might be useful: Check out McMurray Hatchery

Wildebloem has just planted seed from a doubled flower/seedpod, like you show above... I suspect it will produce normal blooms, but one never knows. We'll see in a couple of years!

Use them in a cookie that calls for eggs....2 yolks instead of one egg...or make a recipe of this biscotti. Biscotti Di Prato 3 3/4 C all purpose flour (stirred till fluffy before measuring) 2 C sugar 1 tsp double acting baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 4 eggs 2 egg yolks 1 tsp vanilla ( or 1/2 tsp vanilla and 1/2 tsp almond extract if using almonds) 1 2/3 c almonds or hazle nuts coarsley chopped and litely toasted. eggwash Mix flour, sugar, salt and baking powder. whisk together eggs, yolks and extracts, add eggs, etc to flour mixture and stir until a dough forms (looks like it can never happen... but keep working it...it will. I sometimes add a VERY little sprinkling of water) add nuts, turn out on a non-stick surface ( I use a marble board or my formica rolling board) and knead 3 or 4 times. Divide into fourths and shape each piece into a 11 x 2 in. log ( make it "tall" as they flatten while baking) Place on buttered and floured baking sheets, brush with egg wash (egg yolk whisked with 1 T water). Bake at 350 for 35 min and cool 20 min. Slice 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Place on clean baking sheets ( cut side down) and bake 10 or 12 minutes at 275. turn pieces over and bake another 10 minutes. If you want to make them extra fancy, dip half a slice in melted chocolate and sprinkle with finly chopped nuts. You can make bigger 'scottis by making two thicker logs, but be sure to leave room for spread. Best dipped in tea or coffee....or best yet in a sweet dessert wine! Enjoy! Linda

Thats basicly true. Some chicks will hatch with the yol not entirely taken into their bodies, but the yolk is their nourishment which can "feed" the chiock for a day or 2. I have seen eggs where 2 embryos have begun development but they died in shell, never making hatch. The oddities can happen just as often in single celled eggs. When considering all of the possibilites of what could go wrong with births/hatches, its amazing things work as well as they do! As an animal breeder of some 5o years I have seen some strange things, and would add that most have been the results of total outcrosses. I practice quite a bit of inbreeding in all species and rearely have seen oddities from this type breedings, I usually know the parentage of the animals so have(some) control over results. I say this as I kind of figured that inbreeding would come up in the topic.

We had a duck hatch out from a double yolked egg. It had four legs. The main body was female, the embedded twin was male. So I had a four legged duck that was both male and female.

I sold it to a duck rescue organization from North Carolina or Florida, called Lame Duck Rescue. They got a vet to operate on it to remove the male twin, because it was going to cripple the main duck.

So double yolked eggs do hatch out, sometimes.

We put a double yoker in the incubator just to see what would happen. in the end we had 2 fully formed chicks but the never made it out of the shell. Too bad i would have loved to tell people i had twin chickens..Jaime
