Help! Foul smelling hay

I just don't know what to do. I live across from a chicken farm and the owner recently got some cows.

I can handle chicken smells, cow smells and have been for a year with no problems.

A few months ago the farmer brought in these HUGE round hay bales and put them near my property line.

They small really really bad. Like your standing in the middle of the local dump. A real sour smell. I'd hoped the smells would go away at some point but they have not.

I'm thinking of selling my house.

Is it normal for round bales of hay to smell so bad? I mean REALLY REALLY bad? Is there any info I can pass on to the farmer? Is he buying bad hay?

He has them wrapped in white plastic.

Sounds like the hay is rotting. If it was baled while it had a high moisture content, then wrapped in plastic, that can happen. At the least you can ask him to move the hay farther from your house. If the farmer bought the hay and put it on the fenceline, and hasn't visited it since, he may not know of the stench, or the cause of it.

If the hay was bailed wet, it could be a fire hazard. Damp hay can smolder for months in the middle and then start a fire. I would let the farmer know immediately and make sure he checks on the hay and hopefully moves it. I would think he'd be responsible for any fire damages. That might encourage him to do something right away.

Both of these cases (jayagent and dstone) appear to be caused by 1) TOO MUCH GREENS (NITROGEN), 2) NOT ENOUGH AIR AND/OR 3) TOO MUCH MOISTURE. On those tumblers, after you put the dry BROWNS in (not green grass clippings - use straw, paper or sawdust, and NO fertilizer), mix it up, and leave the door open if you can to let some moisture out and air in. Every day or two or as often as you can, close the door, rotate, reopen. Unless it's raining. In a few days it will be much better.

Wash everything that is washable and send everything to the dry cleaners that needs to be dry cleaned. Books and papers can be placed in a container of kitty litter for odor absorption. Upholstered items and mattresses may have to be discarded because mold/mildew and musty smells have settled deep into the padding. An option is to rent an ozone machine and place the affected items in a room with the ozone machine and close the door. Exposing items to fresh air and sunshine is also helpful. Coffee grounds, baking soda, kitty litter, and activated charcoal from the pet store are frequently recommended as odor absorbers. Wood furniture can be washed with mild soap and water and rinsed, a section at a time, and buffed dry with soft cloth. All unsealed surfaces on drawers and inside the cabinet boxes can be wiped with denatured alcohol. If odor persists, then seal with a couple coats of polyurethane. Are you on a (community shared) well or a municipal water system? Do you get the smell from hot and cold or just one? You should have the water tested before your softener. What brand of softener is it? Regenerating every two days is an indicator that the softener is grossly undersized for your water conditions and water usage. You are wasting a lot of water. A properly sized softener should regenerate every 7 or 8 days unless it is a twin resin tank model or there is an iron or manganese problem in the water. How many people in the house? How many bathrooms? Any water hogging appliances... Jacuzzi or the like? Answer those questions and we'll try to help you.

Thank you all so much for your responses! Just to follow up: I called the sales person at Macy's who originally sold these to us. She was very understanding and said "yuck" when I explained it to her--she knew what I was talking about but said they have never heard of a problem with their furniture. She is getting her manager and her rep involved with this. I feel like if they are willing to help at all, she will be the one to make it happen. Also, something I was INCORRECT about with my previous post. I said that you can access the feathers--you cannot. The zipper only removes the cover from the foam cushion. The cover is like a duvet except the back of it is more like interfacing than fabric--thus, letting many feathers escape. So because of this, I won't be able to restuff with something else. My only hope, I'm thinking, would be to take this off and wrap the foam cushion in batting or something. Not sure how that would work as the covers are very tight and very very hard to get back on--I think batting would get all bunched up. I must have "dreamt" I could accesss this or just wishful thinking on my part-ha!:) Anyway, I have read all of your resposnes and very much appreciate them. Annz, I looked at that link and all I can say is "yuck" to what I have! I don't have "down", I have "feathers" and they are bigger than what this site shows. Obviously very poor quality. Sounds like haylage to me. Silage made from hay is riolled up a bit damp and ferments for cattle feed. It shouldnt smell that bad tho?? maybe he poked holes in the wrap moving them and air got in causing ther wrong kind of fermentaion to take place. The smell should ease up soon.

It would definitely be haylage a type of silage made from hay bales. Regular hay is wrapped in either twine or netting. The plastic allows the moisture to be held to ferment it. It will have a sweetish sour fetid smell, somewhat unpleasant at first but it does diminish after a while. Maybe time to plant some aromatic vines on your fence row if it is too overpowering and he plans to store it there in the future.

Why?

Just explain the problem to the farmer and ask him to please move the stuff. Surely there's somewhere less bothersome to put it.

just offering another viewpoint........... I'd make sure my yard/concience was clean then have a talk with the farmer.
Are you implying that everyone should just jump in and coddle the OP cause he/she decided to buy a house next to an established farm?? Let's keep an open mind.
