The farther you space red raspberries, the longer it will take to fill the space to form a solid row, but no matter how far, they will eventually fill the row. The 12 to 24 inch is not the space between the row, but how wide your planting should be, how wide the row should be. They grow in 4 directions, left, right, forward, backward. If your row is too wide, they tend to stay moist, which invites disease. Yes, any trellis method works. You can modify to fit your needs if you need to. Eskota mentioned Autumn Bliss. that was developed by Victoria Knight in the UK. I heard it was great! She also developed Valentina, an orange colored highly disease resistant, excellent tasting raspberry. Only sold in the UK, I would kill for a cutting!! Hi Gary, I grow Anne up here in Sonoma County. It is a delicious yellow berry. Raspberries will sucker and spread to cover any length of row you desire, although to quickly fill a row, a spacing of two to three feet between canes is usually recommended. By transplanting and spreading suckers, you could probably fill a ten foot row by the end of the second year with your two original canes. The canes will grow to six feet or so, and only need light trellising to keep them from flopping over. If by Central California, you mean a coastal location, full sun is great. In really hot inland valleys, they would probably benefit from some afternoon shade. Anne is an everbearer that produces on first year canes, as well as a smaller crop on second year canes. I manage mine by cutting all canes to the ground in the winter, as this maximizes the fall crop on the new canes. Ive been upgraded to a zone 6a in my local area. on my second year of raspberry growth. First year was a tad slow I noticed. Took 4 weeks or so for them to get going. This year they are taking off like rockets. Have several new canes that are over 18" tall so far this year. Once the roots get established they will do well. Another thing about raspberries, is they have a shallow root system. Don't bury those roots too deeply.

Thank you for the name. I have no idea what a primocane looks like and I'll have to watch it carefully to see if I can spot one. However, looking up the name on google, I read that Joan J is not the best raspberry and is best known for its shipping attributes. I'll give it until next year to see if it is worth keeping. There must be a reason the other person didn't want the plant. I had planned to put it in a barrel in 2014, but I might just hold off on that. It is sad, because it is growing extremely well and looks very pretty.
