henhouse light

ok, so hubby is wonderful. He spent the whole summer, working on our new chicken coop. (It's a bit excessive for our little flock of six, but I imagine next spring there will be additions). It was a lot more work than I thought! The girls have been in there a month, but we still have to make some outdoor rain shelter, put a net over the outdoor run, build some steps, build one more door and put up some more roosts (they still huddle).

What I do have is electricity! He put in a light on a timer. The question is, when should I start using the light? The night time lows are in the 40's right now. It doesn't get super cold here in the winter, but it does freeze. So when it's cold, do I leave the light on all the time for heat?
