dormant oil spray questions

dormant oil will be step 2 in my new pest control program. (step 1 was cleaning up all the debris and fallen fruit last fall.)

I have about 20 mature trees near the house, 60 apples trees 3 years old this spring in another area, and 55 cherry trees starting their 2nd year this spring in a 3rd area.

there has been no significant evidence of pests (excluding deer) that I've recognized on the young trees.

questions:

1. from reading the best time is when buds just start to show on trees. Is this correct?

2. spray options: I have hoses in all three areas so can use a hose end sprayer. Will hose sprayer do an adequate job or do I need a gas or electric sprayer. will hose end vs. gas/electric sprayer require more (or less) oil?

3. spraying: per reading I want to get the trees "wet". seems simple enough. I believe I also want to spray the ground around the trees. Correct?

4. any other considerations I need to be aware of?

5. what is cheapest source for oil and how much should I expect to need.

6. do I need to spray the new trees?

as always thx for help and suggestions.
