Tom Turkey sitting on eggs????

When we left Florida my friend took my turkeys for me. She called today and told me the tom is sitting on eggs. I'm not that well versed on turkeys, but I've never heard of this. Has this happened to anyone else here???

I don't have any Turkeys, but a friend of mine has Muscovy ducks and one of her male ducks will sit on the eggs while the female goes to eat.

I just remembered I was watching a Bald Eagle on a cam a while back and they would take turns too. It really amazes me. Thanks for your input too.

What you are decribing could be an injury or it could be one of several conditions: 'Crookneck' or 'Limberneck' (caused by Avian botulism), or another condition called 'Star Gazing' or 'Twirling'. Both are caused by nutritional problems, although Stargazing is less understood. There are sites on Stargazing that are mainly aimed at finches, but a bird is a bird and the info can apply to poultry. If it is an injury, about all you can do is keep the bird warm and quiet to guard against shock. Some breeds are more susceptible to head injuries (Silkies and Polish chickens for example, since they have skulls that are open on the top) and there is a treatment using Selenium and Vitamin E that I know of that helped save one of my Silkies. I don't know about your region, but I'm in California and my hens will usually begin to lay in late April-early May and will continue through June. This year they are still laying and that's odd. If they are breeding, then the hen is probably ready to begin laying but I wouldn't pay much attention to it until next spring. Fertility is not great at odd times of the year with turkeys and the second year is always better overall. I would suggest that if she goes broody, you pen them up someplace safe because while they roost in the trees at night, they build nests on the ground and are an easy target when they are holed up on eggs.

Depending on how old they are, the males are usually much bigger, have a lot more coloring (females are more drab looking) and the calls are different, during mating season, the females make a scratchy call, and the males make the gobble noise. Someone else might be able to give you a better answer though.

Yes, it happens occasionally that a tom will SET on eggs. It's different than the eagles. In many bird species, both sexes will normally set, and share incubation and feeding duties. Turkeys are not one of them, but it does happen occasionally that a tom will try. Usually he will not set tightly enough for the entire term to actually hatch a clutch out.

Our tom turkey took care of the chicks better than the hen did after they hatched. He would feed them, keep the chickens away and talk to them. Our hens just wander around not knowing what to do with the chicks. : )

I have a tom that is sitting on eggs - the sad thing is that they are peafowl eggs and I don't think they are fertile -- does anyone know how long peahens stay fertile after being separated from the peacock? thanks, sjh

Our Tom is currently sitting on our duck eggs. He won’t let her near them. It’s a cute site to see.
