Any opinions on a Cinnamon Spice apple?

Sounds good from the description:

"Named for its rich, distinct cinnamon flavor, this apple tastes similar to an apple pie. Found near Bolinas, CA by Jesse Schwartz. Exceptionally sweet, medium in size, wine-red fruit with some yellow hue. Tree of medium vigor, with upright shoots."

Anyone have one and can comment on the flavor?

I was also curious about this variety. Stark Brothers is selling them:

So, two "Antique" varieties of apples that I have never heard nor read of. They sound interesting though.

I've had the Chenango Strawberry from a local orchard, but didn't grow it. It's a summer apple, pretty tasty, but won't keep, of course. Still, probably worth growing if you have the room for it and like something in August. They're quite pretty and bear a strong resemblance to a Golden Delicious in shape, with a red blush on yellow skin.

This is my first time with apple bench grafts, ordered from Kuffel Creek Nursery. I planted them all in five gallon pots with potting soil as soon as they arrived, and have been picking off the new sprouts on the rootstock. All ten are sprouting out nicely from above the graft. I have them in mostly sunshine, in an out of the way of traffic place where they wonÂt get knocked about by the dogs, cats, possums, or kids. TheyÂll probably go in the ground this summer, when theyÂre larger. There were three that didn't want to sprout out at first, but are showing green sprouts now, as of this weekend. Thanks, all, for your comments. I keep looking at different nursery websites, and keep finding MORE kinds that sound interesting. The first list came from Raintree and Stark's. I wish I had room for 50 trees, but I'll have to narrow it down a bit. Funny story, though, about 'Pristine' -- I actually had a small tree of this variety about 6 or 7 years ago. It had been in the ground about 18 months and was doing well. I had it near, but not directly under, some power lines. One day, I had the dog out in the yard, and a mourning dove perched on the power lines. When the dog saw a bird or squirrel in a tree, he used to get mad and bite the tree trunk. Well, this time, he bit into and broke off the entire tree! End of Pristine apple. I have a different dog now, that one died of cancer a couple of years ago, and this one doesn't blame the tree for not being able to reach the squirrel.

Cloves, when added whole to a canned product tend to give off a quite strong taste, as can whole allspice and whole cinnamon, as mentioned above. It might be better to make the syrup and simmer it for a half hour with lots of the whole spices, then run it through a strainer prior to filling jars. You could add a single clove and a single allspice berry to each jar, but even for that, it should not be necessary, nd may give too strong a result. Whole spices left in the jars will 'seriously mask' the apple taste! I added a SINGLE whole peppercorn to my dill pickle quarts, when opened, they had a strong pepper overtone taste, which I don't really care for.

jkom, that's funny, my mother loved pickled pigs feet, and their similar product, pickled pigs knuckles. The person who taught her to eat them? My Aunt Amy, whose real name was Yoshiko and who came to the States with my Uncle Chuck, he met her and married her while he was in the service stationed in Japan. I always liked liver, although I seemed to be an oddity among my friends for it. I still like liver with bacon and onions, although I seldom eat it now on the advice on my doctor. Peppi, all of those things are also available here, and none are considered particularly odd. In fact, Jiffy muffin mix is made here in Michigan, and I've always got canned salmon, canned sardines and canned smoked oysters in the pantry. I don't particularly like the oysters, but Elery loves them. I don't really like headcheese much either, truthfully, but I can get it and I've eaten it. Ashley still likes the Mrs. Grass' chicken noodle soup in a box as well as the Vienna sausages in a can. So, although I'll eat liver and headcheese, I think "non-dairy creamer" is weird, how can it be creamer, but be non-diary? I haven't figured out yet what exactly Cool Whip is, but my brother eats it frozen, like ice cream. Annie

We have Cinnamon Spice, and it bears reliably even in our brutal heat and warm winters. It colors up well and the flesh is crisp, sweet, and juicy, but alas; we can't even taste a hint of cinnamon. It may be more pronounced in your climate.

All in all very worth growing.

My experience is similar to Applenut's. Have had it growing here for nearly 15 years. Nothing to write home about, and certainly not a hint of cinnamon that I can ascertain.

If you're looking for a 'summer' apple, I'll recommend MonArk - ripens mid-July here; a big, firm crisp red-over-yellow apple, with decent disease resistance. Good for eating out-of-hand and cooking - and unlike most early varieties, it WILL keep under refrigeration for 6 weeks or more before it begins to go mealy.
