WANTED: what to do about seeds that don't germinate

last fall I did a large trade. None of the seeds that I received germinated. off all the seeds I started this season, only the ones from that one trader have been a problem. So it has to be the seeds. Tried to contact her, but while she is still listed here there is nothing on her page, including no contact info or email, even thru g-web. Any suggestions?
Other than not wasting my garden space with any of her seeds that would have gone directly to the garden. All are going in the trash so that I don't accidently pass the on.

You could express your dissatisfaction on the Rate & Review Forum (if you haven't already): many people check there before initiating or responding to a trade request.

If it is the member you did a review for last fall, I believe that you might have spelled the name incorrectly. My guess is that it doesn't have a period (.) in it.

I bring them to work and give them to my co-workers. I do that with a lot of the extra divisions and seedling plants in the spring. This year I brought in 10 or so divisions of Siloam Doodlebug and 8 divisions of Snowy Eyes and a few of some others. I also bring in other plants, like Lady's mantle, iris, perennial geraniums and stuff. I hate composting perfectly good plants and I'm too lazy to sell them. Most of my co-workers are not die-hard gardeners like us and don't care about things like names and genetics - they're just happy to get a nice plant with neat flowers for free! I've been doing this for a few years and it's always fun to have people come back to me and rave over a plant I gave them a year or 2 ago.

Okay. Sounds like you've been getting alot of misinformation and half truths. First, there's no such thing as a grout with the sealer built in. Many installers will try and tell you that about modified grouts which include latex polymers in the grouts, but that's bigtime false. The other, which is more of a half truth is concerning epoxies. Although there's no sealer built right in, sealer can not be used on epoxy grout, either, because it's actually a plastic, and as such, won't allow sealers to penetrate into the grout. However, it also doesn't NEED to be sealed being that by itself, it won't allow alot of the staining that normally occurs (although it also can't be said that it's stainproof-- that's also a mis-statement). Now, Many of your questions can be answered if you go to the top of the bathrooms forum list and click on the "gallery" link. I have a thread over there entitled Tile FAQ's. In there, I go into alot of detail concerning grouts and the choice thereof. One of the things I stress is my opinion that you're better off choosing medium to dark colors in high traffic areas, rather than depending on grout sealers, because the BEST that they'll do is delay the inevitable. With the medium to dark colors, you won't see traffic patterns, staining, or aging of the grout NEARLY as much. This also goes for epoxy grouts, with respect to choosing colors. One other thing I say in that thread, and this WOULD pertain to you-- For the most part, it's my opinion that the use of epoxy grouts in residential installations, although everything people say they are, are very high priced overkill. There are only two times where I feel the use of epoxy grout is justified. One is if you're doing a tile countertop, and the other is if you have pets-- especially multiple pets, who might tend to have "accidents" every once in a while. Hopefully, I haven't confused you even further. If after reading this as well as the FAQ, you still have questions, don't hesitate to ask. :-) Matter of fact, I think your questions' going to be added to it, concerning the "grouts with sealer built in"!

Hi Plllog! "That is, I know it's possible, but might not be in your budget." See, there's the crux of it. This little beverage center idea of mine was not in the original budget. (Nor, alas, were new drywall in the livingroom and halls, the gorgeous walnut top on my used cabinet island, the matching gorgeous top that will soon be on the new media cabinet and the near full gut of the bathroom.) And we're still determined to get through remodeling our ugly duckling without taking out a loan or dipping into savings. Conventional wisdom says: Wait until the coffers are full again but that's so hard to do. First off, I'm a cheapskate. Even if the goose who laid the golden egg waddled up onto my deck and built a nest, I'm not sure I would willingly pay someone to mess up the walls I just paid to fix. Second, I'm not quite cheap enough. My new kitchen is starting to look pretty good but, gosh, it would look so much better if the microwave and coffee maker didn't take up so much room on that one counter. I'm willing to spend a little bit more to change that, especially since I'm going to have a piece of countertop leftover that should be just the right size. Still, it's nice to know that it's possible. Maybe when the coffers ARE full again I'll put a tile counter outside on my deck to shade the golden goose should she happen to wander by ;) Thanks for your help!

I am crying as I read this. I am so sorry for your loss. You had a beautiful cat and friend. I had a similar situation with my soul mate Maddie. She was 15.5 years old and was miserable. She ate, drank, walked etc but she was not herself and I knew I could not let her live the way she was. I too posted here on this forum asking for advice. In doing so, it helped me come to the conclusion that was one I already knew but was having a hard time accepting. We put her down and I was sick with anxiety and sadness. It has gotten better over the months but everytime I see a sad story about a dog or one that even resembles her I get an ache in my heart. Luckily, those moments are becoming less. Stay strong. You had a wonderful friend who loved you and you loved back. You gave your cat a wonderful life. In my mind that is a gift. Huge hugs!

Well, letting others know might be good. so they won't lose out.

Don't trade with her again.

Pregermination is always good, to see If any germinate.

If you can't pre germinate, then plant out and give them their two weeks germination time. And if they haven't germinated by then, succession plant something else very different that the previous seeds, so if any come up, you'll be able to tell which plant is which.

Meanwhile, post a want ad for whichever seeds, you got from her for replacements.

Sadly, stuff happens. I did trades where they say they didn't get them, and sent a replacement, or gave free seeds, saying one chance deal, if they don't get them, I can't resend.

I did a trade once and was surprised to recieve some seeds marked harvested in 2006! Gee, why weren't they grown, or rehomed in 6 years? Who knows if they will grow.

send a preliminary email to a seller asking about the seeds you want, such as how many in a pack, when were they grown/harvested, was it possible for them to have crossed, are they a hybrid variety, were they germination tested, were they from a commercial pack, were they hand saved by the trader, were they grown organically? etc.

most growers know all these answers.

Also, I bought 5 seeds to a squash, and only one grew.

I planted 7 purple beauty pepper seeds, and only 5 sprouted.

When I plant a type of seed, and get low on it, I add that seed onto my want list, until I'm able to save seeds to that variety myself.

As I'm able to save my own seed to varieties, I take that variety off the want list, and usually put it on the available list.

I also ask for seed counts before trading now.

Someone asked for something. I had a whole extra pack that I could have sent. When I asked how many seeds she'd send, she said 6. To some, that might be ok, but it's hard for me to front $2.00 for bubble pack postage, to receive, 6 seeds for a 49 cent stamp. To me, sending 6 seeds isn't really worth the postage, when I could buy a whole pack of many seeds something for the same amount.

Sometimes, I will trade a pack of 20, for a lesser amount, if I don't have that variety, and the postage cost is the same.

If you post what seeds didn't sprout, maybe someone who reads the post, could send you some to you, as a "pay it forward".
