Garden use for wood/wire lettuce boxes?

Each week I have access to one or two lettuce boxes that I'd like to put to use instead of seeing them go to the landfill. These boxes are made of thin wood strips maybe 1/8" thick and 3" wide, held together with soft wire. A wood/wire lid can be fastened down with a wire loop. The boxes are 30+ long x 10" h x 16" w.

You folks always come up with fine ideas, so I hope you can help with this little problem. Thank you.

The first thing I thought of was a bin for storing your bulbs over the winter. ALthough, that won't use that many bins...
Have you thought about trying to get rid of them on Freecycle or Craigslist?

Good idea, Barb. The first thing I thought of was Freecycle. :-)

I, personally, would think of a way to use them as planters. I think they'd look great lined with moss and hung as planters by each window.

Here's my lettuce experience don't know if it will help you. I've been growing mesculin blends for about 4 years in various places in the garden and in containers. Lettuce planted in small window box type of container left on the ground on east side of backyard-got off to a slow start in early May, bolted around mid-July. Learned to move container into more shaded spot during the hotter spells. Lettuce planted in ground in front of and next to cucumber trellis - east facing side of house right by neighbors asphalt driveway. Got off to a quick start in early May, bolted around mid-July...very quickly. Lettuce planted in self-watering container on west side of backyard in next to my asphalt driveway in the best sun in the yard slightly shaded by planters with peppers. Got off to a quick start in early May, bolted in early July...like overnight! Lettuce planted in flower garden on north side (front) of the house, very close to the house, receiving some afternoon sun, shaded by irises, day lillies and astilbe. Planted in July, grew slowly at first, bolted around mid-September. I'm in a reasonably urban environment so there are a variety of microclimates in and around my house. I think my lettuce experiments this year will involve starting the lettuce in the best sun area and moving it to a more shaded area once it gets going. That is the sum of my unscientific lettuce gardening experience - don't know if it helps.

Retaining moisture is good; too much heat is bad. Lettuce won't germinate well in warm soil so be careful that the plastic doesn't warm the soil and not at all if you cook it. I would suggest a row cover material to help retain moisture instead. I like the box idea. I've made legs for 4 similar boxes that I grow bunching onions in. Getting the plants to a more managable height saves your back and makes drainage easier.

The garden mesh mentioned in this thread works pretty well and is non-toxic. Chicken wire also works, but shows through the mulch a little more easily. On the ventilation question, the top fits so badly at the corners that it always vents. To hold in heat, I cover the closed box with an old blanket if it's going below 20. As a safety precaution against a closed lid on warm days, I place a wood stake across a front corner of the frame's top, then prop the lid open with another stake. If my prop fails, there's still an inch of open vent from the spacer. Very high tech! The great thing about the shower door is its weight, which makes it wind resistant. Still, I only use this thing from Nov to April, then store it through summer. In addition to my box, I have a couple of small hoop tunnels for kale, arugula, parsley, etc. They are useful, but not as reliable as the box with a heavy lid. Last week it was 5.6 degrees one night, then a few days later a half inch of ice. Under these conditions the tunnels needed checking (it was slippery out there!), but the box ran itself. Gee, I'd love to have boxes like that! The first thing I'd do is completely organize my Garden Room. What a great thing to have -- a box that holds things yet allows you to see what's in it and allows for the flow of air to boot! I could store all my summer bulbs in them, among many, many other items in my gardening room. I could also label them easily with a permanent marker. Once organized, I'd start taking them apart so I could use the wood for staking plants in the garden. Then I'd get DH busy with his table saw, and have him cut me up some decent small stakes to use as labels. I'd try to have him cut the stake in half, and then about every 10 inches, so I'd have lots of room to write names, and still be able to put it firmly in the ground. Using a permanent marker, the stake should last at least 3 years, perhaps more. Oh, and I'd really like some for my 'root cellar', where I keep all of my apples, pears, onions, potatoes, squash, etc. Again, the air flow and being able to see things would be a great advantage. You could also spray paint them and use them for storage throughout the house -- just fit them into your decor! Say, any idea where I could get some of these boxes? MacThayer

Thanks for the many good suggestions, Macthayer. The person I get them from gets wilty lettuce from a grocery store for her rabbit rescue; maybe that gives you an idea of where you could get your own. Tomatobob
