help killing grass and weeds..

My gravel driveway is being overtaken by grass and weeds, i cant afford to keep buying this hight price grass killer that only lasts about 2 weeks..lol..does anyone have any home remedies that might want to share with me? It looks so bad and im tired of spending 2 hours weed eating my driveway! Im not so worried about the main stretch from the road up to the house, its just the big part at the house and garage, makes it look bad.

HELP!!

Ooh, that's a tough one. You could zap them with vinegar, but it's still a high-maintenance chore. Could you put a thick layer of mulch over the whole thing? 6" should be enough to kill anything growing, and you could probably get it dumped free or cheap from tree trimmers.

This one would cost some money and elbow grease, but I saw a beautiful driveway being built around here the other day where they spaced out pavers and put clumps of mondo grass in between. Very eye-catching, but there's a big initial investment.

I would say to pull the gravel and put a thick layer of heavy plastic sheeting down underneath it, almost like pond liner, but eventually I think you'd have weeds in there again as dirt accumulates between the rocks.

You could try a propane weed burner. That's labor intensive and you have to stay on it. Be careful if the grass is dry.

We've had close to record rainfall in Indianapolis this spring, so I haven't really had to water at all yet. When I watered last year, it took about 4 hours with a sprinkler to get a tuna can full of water onto each section of the yard. With the drought last year, I watered a couple of times a week, since it was the first summer for the grass. I over-seeded last fall & again this spring, so didn't use any pre-emergents. The lawn was filling in great, with just a few bare spots. I was super excited because I have the worst soil imaginable. We're the last street in the subdivision & I think my yard contains all the back fill from all 800+ houses here! In the fall of 2011 I cleared out all the weeds & rubber mulch left by the previous owner &spread yards of a compost/topsoil mix over the existing dirt before I spread the seed. It was a miserable job, but finally having a lawn made it worthwhile. Then I came home to a yard that is half brown, dry & dying. From your reseeding comment, I'm guessing i'll have to live with it now & that's my best bet for a lawn NEXT summer. Should I dethatch it before I seed to get rid of the dead stuff? Will aerating it help? I'll try anything at this point!

Drought helping me kill weeds and Bermuda grass

It seems that there are many recommendations for eradication. The one that worked for me, and allows me to plant immediately - dig it up, filter the stolens out, and plant. Bermuda can grow deep, survive drought and neglect. I overhauled a very large front yard with a simple tool - a square shovel (called an Irish shovel, don't know why)after enough rain to soften the soil. My lot is impenetrable ancient marine terrace of silt, clay and sand. It's fairly easy to sift the stolens from the dirt via a wire mesh on a frame that fits a wheel barrow, or you can simply throw out the grass layer. Yes, you can do solarization, you can do round-up, you can do rototilling for however long it takes... but imho the prep is everything. Fighting resprouting grass is miserable, neverending work. Spend the time up front sifting the bermuda grass out and spend zero weeding time fighting it later. My neighbor did not bother to remove the bermuda, and it comes back every year, even with mulch. Many of the previous posts are spot on - rototilling will not eliminate bermuda. The comment of 'tilling destroys the soil structure' is highly subjective to the type of soil. If I had not completely turned and amended my garden then nothing would grow. It would be helpful if you posted your soil type or did a 'jar test' so that others can make recommendations. I resoded my yard last spring and i went this route. 1. Sprayed entire lawn with 2% Glyphosate solution. 2. Let sit for 2 weeks. 3. Tilled up lawn. 4. Let sit for two weeks. 5. Sprayed entire lawn with 2% Glyphosate solution. 6. Tilled and sodded. I was able to get rid of some Bermuda, and most all of the weeds.

I had wood chips dropped off by a tree service years ago in my driveway, and now it's easy to use a shovel to dig up the Bermuda. The mulch turns black underneath, and helps the pumpkins I have growing along my driveway.

You might also try buying loose bagged salt and sprinkle it up and down the driveway. If you have any trees on the edge be careful, as the salt will run in rain. Salt will kill grass and weeds, as well as soak into the ground and keep new stuff from coming up.

I use ROUNDUP along the fence lines and garden perimeters and before I make a new bed for perennials. Its easy to mix up and use a paint brush or other form of wiper to just get the intended areas, or a sprayer in large areas. I sprayed 1 day around the barns then went and turned the chickens out, forgetting I had just sprayed. They were not effected even tho they grazed where i had just sprayed.
