one lonely duck??

I posted before of the loss of my duckling to a raccoon...now I only have the one. Is it mean not to get another one? it lives with 8 hens rabbits and 2 goats. Will it need another duck companion? I'm on the verge of getting another,but won't if it's not necessary.

I would think you would be able to tell if it is lonely or mourning. When this happened to us our lone duck just sat on the side of the pond not doing ducky things anymore (no swimming or dabling) once we got another companion duck all duck like activities resumed.
Perhaps your lone duck will get enough socialization with the hens. We've always kept or hens and ducks in separate pens (but next to each other)thru the winter months and the ducks out on the pond spring summer and fall. So you see our duck was truly alone.

If I had one lonely duck I would give it the companionship of some potatoes, carrots, onions, and a little salt.
But instead, all of my ducks run together and seem MUCH happier that way.

Trying to comment I live in Alaska. Have had to take on flock that was being fed by woman who passed away this summer. First about 50 ducks now down to small group. Winter right now so guessing food is scarce. They eat the sunflower seeds that fell from bird feeder until I read about woman passing. Hoping they all survive but not trying to encourage to stay. Wildlife people say don't feed them but have over 2 feet of snow and other birds showing up. Hard not buy their food. Love to see them but they are spooked to see me at the window after this summer them stalking, staring at my house. School bus glad they don't stay all as they were stopping traffic this summer. Hoping for their survival. Loved all posts here. You guys are awesome!

One lonely leek

Here is one of my all time soup recipes. One leek may not give you a full cup but that won't matter all that much. Potato Leek And Stilton Soup 1 Tbsp butter 1 shallot chopped finely 1 cup leeks thinly sliced ( don't use to much of the dark green portion) 1 cup potato diced 2 cups chicken stock 1 to 1 1/2 cups cream salt and pepper to taste pinch nutmeg few drops lemon juice 2 oz stilton or other blue cheese Melt butter, add shallot and leek cooking until soft but not browned. Heat the chicken stock and add to the leeks, add the potatoes. Cook until potatoes are just tender. Cool and puree in the food processor. Separately heat and reduce the cream. Stir in the blended leek mixture. Bring to a gentle boil. Add seasonings and lemon juice. Pour into bowls and top each with 1/2 ounce crumbled Stilton. ( I add the cheese to the actual soup with the lemon juice and seasonings)

cpp6318,,being a vegetarian,,it's not an option...;)
but he does seem happier these days swimming in his pool ect..just wondered if another was a must. I'll know if and when the right time arises again...till then I guess "one is the lonliest number that he'll ever be"..LOL
