someone,,please help! bugs question

ok,,I have found tiny bugs all over the feed bins in the feed shed,again.had them last year too,but went away after winter. I found them again,they look like lice,but their not on my hens,just the bins..all over. I also found some under the sink in the kitchen!!!! What the H--!?? I'm going nutts with these bugs,to the point of just getting rid of everything outside,including the hens. Does anyone else have this? or know wht thiey are? If you look up "book lice" they look exactly like that. But would book lice be found on feed bins??? PLEASE HELP!I'll try to post a pic

Could not see the picture, but it sounds like a tiny grain insect. Feet are on the front end of the body just behind the head. These are an indication that you are buying feed that is over 1 year old. They are harmless to your birds. Just feed up all your existing feed. When you get new feed in leave it in the bags that it came in. If you can clean out your bins and put them out in the hot sun for a few days. If any eggs are there they will bake in the hot sun. These little critters can not survive intense sunlight. If you can not put you feed bins out in the sun than carefully try a heat lamp. If the bins are in an area that the birds can not go sprinkle some seven dust about the area around and under the bins. This should prevent their return. It is always a good practice to clean bins between fillings-one should never add new feeds to old feeds. All you end up doing is possibly allowing some of you feed to get old and possibly infested with insects and molds. Old feed can have dangerous mold in it that is not visible. If this continues to be a problem check the temperature of the area that you are storing your feed in. If it is above 85F move your bins to a cooler place. Feed looses it nutritional values when stored in warm places and the warmth hastens the incubation of all kinds of insect eggs that are always present in feeds. Hope this helps. Virgil

yes,this was helpful,,thank you! I've been readding scary things like straw itch mites ect...but these aren't mites,,definitely.
any breakout of bugs freaks me out!! I feeli like they're all over me!!

Vzz-- Thanks for the detailed information and intelligent questions. York Rose is correct about rose slugs on the mini rose. If you don't find the worms underneath, they have already been picked off by wasps. The Double Delight looks fine to me. The gnarly new leaves may have been injured by aphids or another small insect-- this is probably trivial damage. Get some web images of aphids; those on eastern roses are usually green or peach colored. Just wipe them off with your fingers, or you can ignore them short of total encrustation. The dark shading on the left side may be spray burn from the soap. Using soap or oil on roses in hot weather is iffy. I don't see any signs of waterlogging. I would fill the pot to within 1" of the rim with more soil and a bark mulch of 1-1/2". The rose will appreciate the increased rooting depth. The bottom 1-2" in pots tends to stay too wet for roots to use. I would water pots as soon as there is slight drying under the mulch. The soil needs to be quite moist. When you irrigate, water until there is drainage from the holes, possibly two gallons at a time depending on the pot size. Don't use a pot saucer. Pots here don't need daily watering, but I can't say about your conditions with hot all-day sun. It's good that your pot is a pale color. Possibly your rose might use 5 gal. per week in hot weather, less in spring or fall. After you use up the Bloom Buster, switch to regular, rose, or acid Miracle Gro or a cheaper equivalent. Roses use 3x as much nitrogen as phosphate, so the BB formula makes no sense.

My response might not be what you wanted, but I would like to point out that today's botanist must have a solid background in biochemistry and genetics, plant physiology, taxonomy,morphology,and several other subjects. Also, there is a BIG difference between botany and horticulture. I advise consulting a dictionary. Botanical studies have greatly enriched my life;I believe it will enrich yours. I wish you luck!

that's not a biting of anything. it's some kind of damage done to the leaf. It could have been folded or crushed at some point. maybe when it was repotted several leaves got crushed. So not problem there. the rest of the leaf is a good colour of green. Its not lacking sunlight for sure. Now if you placed it outdoors in direct sunlight it would have caused sunburns and damaged the plant. -- an error I made myself when I transplanted here in Canada. I came from the tropics where these plants are plentiful. These are under canopy plants and so they enjoy indirect sunlight -which is the reason they have such large leaves because that's needed for all the sunlight they can get. They are climbers too as they tent to grow up jungle trees to capture that sunlight. But they always stay within the shade. Yep, they can grow upwards of 20 feet. I've seen taller growths in the rainforest. However you do need to consider root space. if it's cramp then it can no longer sustain taller growths. you can always keep it short. Anyway.. you get the point. No direct sunlight. And lots of humidity.

I couldn't see the pic either, but what Seramas says makes sense. Around the house (away from children) you can also spray using the Adams Flea & Tick Mist with IGR (Insect Growth Regulator), it's safe for birds but I wouldn't spray it on their food. It kills not only the adults, but hatching eggs as well, and keeps them down for three months.

When I bring home anything grain-based from the market, or small bags of parakeet seed, I always freeze it right away for three days--it kills anything living in it. :)

There is a product called Oxine (AH) which works as a sanitizer for both birds and surfaces, if you Google it you'll find more info, but Shagbark Bantams talks about it here, very good article:

I don't know if it works on adult pests, but it may on their eggs, and it's supposed to be safe for animals and humans, even to breathe. I'm going to be trying the Oxine (AH) this coming month.
