Taming Geese

Good Morning Everyone,

I have two adult african geese who are not tame at all, they hang out in my pond but never really come near humans. I recently purchased 6 embden goslins and I would like these to be friendlier than my africans. I make sure to spend time hanging out with them in their pen every day. However, my dilemma is what to I need to do to ensure these are friendlier than my africans? Also, what is it that I can give them to eat (out of my hand) that geese absolutely would love?

Dandelion greens are a big hit with my geese. And recently they discovered the joys of watermelon. Be careful how "friendly" you let the ganders get. Many people believe this can lead to aggression during the breeding season, since you are breaking down natural inhibitions by "taming" them.

My geese have all been raised from small goslings which makes them easier to "tame" but I created one dangerous gander with my first geese. Now I encourage my gander to keep a little distance.... We are friendly, but not on patting or hand-feeding terms. He likes to be talked to, however, and they all come to me when I go out there.

If you have the room for more geese, you might want to look at getting some Pilgrim goslings next spring. Pilgrims are sweethearts. And since the ganders are white with blue eyes and the geee are grey with dark eyes, it is easy to adjust your treatment of them. They are just a little easier than some of the other breeds.

Hi Bewitch - welcome to the wonderful world of geese.

I agree with Maggie, be careful of what you wish for. We have two "africans" - turned out to be Brown chinese (Terrific watch dogs!) . We raised them from day-olds and they'll melt your heart at this age. Come next spring, you'll wish you'd have set up some boudaries. We were careful NOT to hand feed them and even got them some pals (gray geese) to round out the flock as they were getting a little TOO chummy at about 4 to 5 months. Glad we did. During breeding season, our gander still ran me around the yard quite a bit. He only charged me, never sank any 'teeth' in. Don't know if he ever really intended to go full bore, but it was a powerful bluff! Emden are apparently even more aggressive. We steered clear of them.

Our advice? THink of it more as getting them accustom to your presence and establishing patterns. Get them used to being herded around, where to go and where not to go. Geese are very smart, they learn fast...and buckle up for breeding season. COuld be a bit of a ride. Well worth it, We were blessed with 8 goslings this spring, but our experience overall taught us that these birds required more 'management' than our other poultry to keep everyone safe, happy and supplied with ample space.

As for treats, ours like canned corn and LOVE fresh greenleaf spinich. GOod luck.

My geese are out grazing during the seasons that support it, but I also give them a bit of scratch, consisting of whole corn, wheat, and oats, before they are put away in the evening all year round, placed in a large rubber bowl. Over the years, I have noticed that their preference as to which of the grains in the scratch they eat changes according to the season. For example, during the warmer/hot months, they pick through it and eat all the wheat and oats. As fall approaches, they go more for the corn, eventually eating nothing but the corn over the winter, leaving the wheat and oats, starting the whole thing over again in the spring, gradually leaving more corn behind, eating more wheat and oats. To try to reduce waste, I gave what they left behind to the chickens, but they are on a similar schedule. But, since when I give this "refuse" to the chickens, it's just tossed either on the coop floor or on the ground in their pen, depending on the season, and if it doesn't compost/rot, it sprouts and they are happy to eat any sprouts year round. A lot does get wasted, though. So, in observing this, adjusting the wheat/corn/oat ratio in the scratch accordingly in step with the seasons seems to be a solution. The chickens DO get organic layer year round, and the geese get hay through the winter, but I get straw for bedding and nesting, this past year it was difficult to find plain straw, so I had to get "wheat straw" for bedding, and there was a substantial amount of grasses, etc., in it that they were more than happy to eat. I think the economy is affecting how/what farmers are bailing up for winter forage/bedding?

Thanks for the correction, Fancifowl, just sharing what weve learnedthough we HAVE noticed that the professional postulation made about our Africans is probably true. As we compare them to real Aftricans, its likely that ours have been intermixed with a lot of Brown Chinese. If my knowledge of the breeds history is correct, the African breed came from the Chinese anyway, so if the stock lines for barnyard flocks are blurred, it may be of no surprise. (perhaps a cross is heartier), and for we beginners, our back yard batch is fine... None the less, we cant help feeling a tad bit of disillusionment to learn that what we ordered from the hatchery isnt quite what we ended up with. Were grateful to the breeders out there (like yourself) for their efforts to maintain a breed. Should we decide to order more, we will likely do so from Holderreads (or other reputable hatchery), just so we know for sure what were getting and can share their offspring with confidence (should the occasion ever one day arise). Having watched over the decades what backyard breeders have done to several dog breeds (with meager regulation from the AKC - dont get me started) its nice to know that there are those out there like yourself working to protect individual breed standards.

Of course there is always the question about making wild animals tame by feeding them, thus making them more vulnerable to hunters, etc., but I dunno-the deer in my area recognize me and let me approach, but disappear if anyone else comes around. Most geese are very territorial and will attack people who approach a nest or mate, so you have to know your animals. Tame deer are the most dangerous of all, I've read. Newspaper accounts tell of urban deer, who are never hunted and thus unafraid of humans, attacking people in their own driveways. It's usually best to let wild animals be wild, and to get a large mammal dependent on humans for food is often the way to get it killed. Like the signs say in the State Parks, a fed bear is a dead bear. And feeding birds human food, like bread crumbs, etc., is never a good idea. Veterinarians warn people not to feed pet dogs human food because it causes the same diseases in dogs that it causes in people, and cooked, processed, chemical-filled food is too nutritionally compromised for wild animals with their natural, raw food diets. Of course, you can feed all the white bread you want to Starlings and House Sparrows. These dumpster birds seem to thrive on garbage!

Dale The raccoon are thinning out here also. The DNR started dropping a hybred or whatever you wish to call it, type of rattle snake out of helicopters last Summer to help thin the deer popluation. By drop, I means 100's of them at a time and mostly in the southwestern part of the state. This new breed of rattler has a pattern much like a Copperhead. But has rattlers. They also have a black ring approx 1/2" wide at the base of their tail where the rattles start. This new breed of rattler is very aggressive when compared to the Eastern or Timber rattler. The real kicker that gets people. It is against the law to kill them. Back to the subject. People here think that these new snakes that can kill a full grown deer with one bite have also been takeing a toll on just about any animal that they can find to bite. Including racoon and rabbits. Disease I beleive is really taking the biggest toll on them. Black Bear are now being seen in places that they have never been seen before. We have very healthly black bear popluation. At the mine where I work, we have been "baby setting" a mother and her three cubs. She has a tracking collor for the DNP have been interested in her. She has had three cubs each year for the past 6 years. Very rare for a female bear here to have that many cubs each year. The mama has some cute and lively little ones this year. We love to watch them play within 50 of us when we are working. We do and will not feed them. For one guy use to feed some bears at the site and they busted windows and ripped apart the inside of a lot of equipment looking for food..

Hi we just bought two (male and female) 5 months old geese...i think they are the chinese variety. Have no experience at all with geese, we have them here for about 3-4 days. But they are always scared and run away when anyone, including the family when approaching them. Is there a way to "tame" them so that they don't run away from us? but still keep a distance so that come breeding time, we will not experience the bad "chase" ? and can geese who are brother and sister still mate and produce healthy eggs?
I'm more a cat person, so with cats, siblings is not good for mating...will it be the same?
