Oh no...groundhogs like Campanulas? What am I saying? The only thing they've stopped eating is the invasive Garlic Mustard I'm trying to conquer without much headway. Drat...I've got three Campanula I got on sale last Fall, babied through winter in containers and now need to go into the mailbox bed. If I can't find enough plants to withstand deer, rabbits, groundhogs and slugs I'm going to have everything in containers with fencing around a pot ghetto larger than I've already got.

Those small green worms may have been syrphid fly larvae. (Also called flower flies or hover flies.) They eat aphids not leaves. That's likely the reason you didn't see any holes in the hellebore leaves. Oh well. Live and learn. That's what gardening is.

These could any number of moth larva and very often the best way to treat for these kinds of pests is with an insecticidal soap, which is a fairly broad spectrum poison but is only harmful when wet. Once dry it has no harmful residual affect. In early life stages maybe, possibly, Bacillus thurigiensis - Kurstaki could have been helpful, and if the insecticidal soap does not help maybe something with Neem Oil in its makeup. Always start with the least toxic means of control available and work your way up that ladder. Never, ever start with the most toxic means of control since they all adversly affect the life of the beneficial insects and the birds that can help control the few pests there are.

I am having the same issue ... I took a very long close look at the backside of some leaves and saw what looks like very fine spider web and tiny black dots (I'm thinking bug poo, eww) so I think it is some kind of mite. I have to wait until in the morning, as it is raining-again- and then I will hit them good with some insecticidal soap. Die you dirty bugs, die I say!!!! Anyway you might to look again at your leaves, I bet you'll find the same thing. Edie
