Comments (12)The problem with an electric fence in my situation is the size of my water feature. I estimate that it would take about 60 yards of fencing (times however many strands were required) to enclose the feature. It would cross a path twice, posing a tripping hazard. I would have to have more power run to that area of the yard, since all of the outlets are in use. On the positive side, the electric fence would always be on. Pepper spray can work and it is not as bad as some have suggested. I live in Colorado. Here, every officer who attends the Colorado Police Academy is sprayed directly in the face (including the eyes) with mace. It is very unpleasant, but there is never any permanent damage. However, for pepper spray to work, you have to be there to use it. Raccoons are mainly nocturnal, so not a perfect solution. The same could be said for any other "weapons" (slingshots, BB gun, etc.). Apparently, as described in this article from Alaska (http://www.adn.com/outdoors/craig_medred/story/9153851p-9070218c.html) pepper spray can leave a long lasting residue. Perhaps some of that sprayed near the water might be something of a deterrent. Of course, there is something to be said for the balance of nature. Raccoons will help to control the snail population. I've been told to eventually expect visits from mountain lions (they do live nearby) that will be drawn to the water. If true, they might discourage by the raccoons directly or indirectly. For now, I am going to just take a wait and see approach....See MoreWANTED: Limnanthes Douglassi 'Poached Egg Plant'

Comments (14)@ lindenska: I live in NY and plan to put my bananas in the ground. I bought Musa Basjoo. This banana will not only fruit, but it's supposed to be cold hardy as well. Mine says it grows to 10' more or less. I haven't quite decided how I'm going to proceed with mine as yet since I don't have a greenhouse. From what I've read, you could do one of 3 things, bring it in for the winter, cut down (it will regenerate again in the spring) or just leave it as is with some protection against the elements. Since mine is still quite small (only about 2 feet tall) and has several pups, I plan to re-pot and give away most of 'em save one or 2 in hopes of getting fruit. On bananas.org there's tons of info regarding growing nanners....See MoreWould you buy expensive cacti?
Comments (27)Depending on the price of each VS your budget I'd suggest the following If 1500 of your money is equal to or close to 10.00 USA you should be arrested as it's a steal. Don't let the word ( or phrase ) It's rare mean you have to pay a-lot to have one. E Obesa is common in cultivation it's only rare in nature because of humans. In my opinion if you hold it means you like it, holding a plant for more than five seconds tells me you want it. Well in a word you should have took it. E Stella is any/every Euphorbia collectors must have. A very worthy and sometimes sought for plant any owner would admire and be proud to display ( I'll hold my pride on your thread though as pride also runs deep, very deep ) IMO Fat plants are a whole different addiction as are Euphorbia add the two together and you are holding a must have ( but already has) for any collector. Out of pocket here from me $ 15.00 US maybe $20.00. Fatter than that tend to be older and also well kept to get fatter. I would consider higher, if fatter and it looks that good a fatter one would warrant a higher 50.00 US but I would have to pass at 80.00 Kind of cool in looks I'd grab the one on the far left and try to talk em down a couple pounds or $$ With no idea what it is other than a cactus it's worth a shot IMO & would have grabed it if the price moved lower as well Like I said if you hold it you want it and a nice one too Holding rule also applies to the other that I didn't copy from your post and re-post When I C&S plant spend I carrying enough $$$ to buy more than I may want and pass on the ones that have no appealing/ attraction to me IMO ( & you can even ask noto ) It's sometimes a good idea to pre pay with a good deposit for a plant that you may want, have the owner set it aside and come back after considering all the other options. You can loose that special something for a very good price if options aren't negotiated quickly but be somewhat respectable and be accountable for such negotiations. there are also more that I'd suggest My question is how much of your money can I spend where you get to keep the plants ? Yeah I know the pots are small and they tend to grow slowly, hopefully you have some space for them ?...See Moreseamommy
