Chickam Is Back! See Baby Chicks Hatching Right Now!

Our eggs are hatching! :) Here is the link to see & hear them hatching live, online--click the link and scroll down to the bottom of the page:

There are 12 eggs in the incubator, 1 is pipped and peeping, another is rocking back and forth and peeping.

The webcam is NOT up and running yet (it's having issues) but will be up soon, I promise! :)

Oh, that is so cute!! I saw the one chick, so cute! I posted this to facebook so people could see too!

So far 4 chicks! Only the UStream link is working, JustinTV suddenly refused to work. Currently the cam is pointed into the brooder with the chicks, no more eggs are pipping for now. These chicks were all early, so if anymore start to pip we'll point the cam back at the eggs.

Otherwise, we'll move the chicks and cam into the big brooder box tomorrow! :)

Well, we moved across the property two years ago and the garden is/was still over there. So I have been working on building a whole new garden by the new house. New (saved from a local fence builder) fence, cinder block framing (from job sites) and lots and lots of seedlings in the back room. Broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, onion, pepper, tomato and herbs all grown from seed. Laundry room has overflowed into the dining room and kitchen. Then hoping to finish the new pens for the turkeys, bantams and muscovies. Bought a bunch of moldy lumber when I worked in the lumber yard that has just been waiting for me to use it up. Almost there, have to call the old boss and see if I can find some more lumber cheap. Hatched about a dozen ducklings and one goosling in the last week. Our first turkey poults EVER hatched today, I am SSSSSOOOOOOOOOOO excited. They look like they are Royal Palms. I think our Bourbon Red tom has a fertility problem, so I wlll have to put the other tom in with the girls and hope he does the job. Chickens are laying like crazy here too. Have been for a while. I need to post my ads and start selling eggs so I can help with the feed bill. sullicorbitt - why will your hens stop laying in the summer? Heat? Happy Harvesting Billie

^^^ Hahaha...I once had to buy eggs at the market while my girls were molting, I brought them home and made a point to show the eggs to the girls to remind them what they looked like. Laying started up again shortly thereafter. :) Well...we checked both incubators and candled the eggs we could see into last night. A lot of them were clear, especially the Polish eggs. :( But I don't see my Polish ladies getting much action from my roos, the dumb boys! Other eggs have chicks, but I could not tell if they were alive or not, and how fully formed they are. No peeping or activity yet from any of the eggs, but they aren't due to hatch until beginning at 8PM Saturday night. If none of these hatch, I don't know what to think...I know that both of my roo boys are getting their job done and I don't think they have fertility issues, they are healthy fellas. We did change locations for the incubators this year, to my dining room table, in a corner of a room away from windows and doors to help protect from drafts. I THOUGHT I had a great spot, but if this batch doesn't work I'm going back to putting the darned things in the kitchen. :( On top of everything else, we are having weird weather here since yesterday, supposed to continue until Tuesday--wind, rain/hail, and tornadoes, of all things! If the power goes out, I have my broody hen contingency plan...Bear, Splash and Blue are all broody and would get to sit on the eggs. :) We checked the cam last night and have it all set up and ready to go, if hatching begins we'll fire it up and I'll notify everyone. Well, I've got a few years of chickens behind me now, so I will venture an explanation. This is my take on the subject, not textbook information. The hen sets until the first eggs hatch and since the chicks do not need food or water for a couple of days, she will continue to set for awhile longer. Unless the eggs are at various stages of development (i.e. the other hens have added eggs days later) the remaining viable eggs will be close to hatching. Chicks in the shell communicate with mom and with each other by peeping. So the hen has a pretty good idea of what's going on and she clucks to the eggs to encourage them. When there are no eggs still peeping, mom considers the hatch complete and goes into caregiver role... takes the chicks for their first walk, shows them how to eat and drink etc. Occasionally there will be an egg that hatches after she leaves the nest, but after a certain point the mother hen has to put the needs of the hatched chicks ahead of the needs of a latecomer. If this happens and I find the late chick still alive, I take it into the house and put it under a lamp to dry off, give it a bit of sugar water and return it to mom using the "2 for 1" trick. "2 for 1" is simple and has always worked for me. I chicknap one of the babies and it hollers to its momma to save it. Momma gets indignant, then upset, then furious. When she is all worked up and the chick is screaming, I return the chick to her... and also the newcomer. Momma is pacified by the return of her baby and never realizes she got extra as well. Isn't it handy that hens can't count? As to why you had one dead chick, chances are pretty good that mom stepped on the egg, forcing the premature hatch and the chick was too injured or too weak to survive.

You know, it was not expensive in money OR time to do this, it was pretty darned simple. :) DH got a PS EyeToy color camera for $5.00 at Gamestop, and YahooLive is the host for the cam, sound and chat, at no cost to us. My husband had the know-how to get things going, but you can find out online and it isn't difficult or complicated. The number of people viewing the cam and talking in chat crashes my husband's computer sometimes, but we just restart things and everything's fine. We wanted to hatch chicks anyway, so thought we'd share the experience. The cam just pointed through the viewing panes in the lid of the incubator, now we set it inside the brooder box. Baby chicks DO have a wonderful effect on all who gaze upon them, it's like Valium for your eyes. *L* And yeah, it is VERY remarkable that Chicken Sister has babies this late in life--but then, both of the boys LOVE her to distraction, you should have seen them run over and burble over her when we brought her back from the vet after her egg-binding adventure. What a couple of love-struck chuckleheads. :) It was very sweet, they missed her so! We'll be hatching again the weekend of June 21st, and will resume chickam then, if anyone wants to watch. We will have our incubators issues solved before we start more eggs. Velvet ~:>

That was awesome! I posted the link to my facebook account, and one lady thanked me saying she used to have some chickens but couldn't anymore because she moved into a condo.

Loved watching this. I get so caught up in it. Our chicks hatch under broodies so I don't get to see this.

You're welcome! We did lose one chick, the one that hatched two days early. :( I'd hoped it wouldn't happen, because she was a feisty little cuss and the child of one of my favorite hens...but obviously something was wrong inside her, possibly something that didn't form quite right since she hatched before she was officially 'done cookin'.

But we did have one last chick that hatched late, so we have four chicks again--three Americaunas mix and one kind of 'mystery' bantam chick--who has our banty roo, Scott for a father, but I'm uncertain of who mom is since the chick is unexpectedly very blonde. The egg was good-sized though, and I thought was from our Silver Laced Wyandotte hen. Time will tell when she feathers out more and we get to see what she looks like!

I brought Moet, our buff Frizzle Cochin hen in as acting mom, she's raised chicks before and is an old pro. I wasn't initially going to do this, but the babies were peeping so loudly for US, that I wanted to nip that stuff in the bud. *L* But it's kind of cool to see the mom and kids interact.

We'll try another hatch with eggs gotten from elsewhere, I'm afraid my girls are getting a little too old for their eggs to reliably hatch successfully (they are at least 4 years old, some are more like 6-7). But this time I was really trying to get some chicks from some of my favorite hens. I'm thinking I'll get some eggs from the local feed store, they've got some ex-battery hens, Cinnamon Queens, that look lovely. :)

I can't wait!! :) I have some guinea eggs in the incubator, but I don't have a webcam. :P I can't wait to see the other hatch! :)

Sorry to hear the early bird didn't make it for you. :(
