What are the elements of a Zen (meditation) Garden

There seems to be a lot of talk about Japanese gardens and their creation, and their meditative qualities. What if you want a Zen/meditation garden that does not follow the Japanese style. What are the design criteria?

Or maybe ask the question another way. What are the elements of a Japanese garden that make it meditative - without discussing specific characteristics of a Japanese garden. Surely you can have a meditative garden that looks nothing like a Japanese Garden??

A search with Goggle found the following description:

"A meditation garden implies a sense of seclusion and personal space. Naturally a place where one can relax, reflect, unwind, ponder new ideas, and contemplate in peace and quiet. "

But that describes just about any garden.
